Periodic Payments. (Formula to calculate Fees, MAIB & Motor Tax for periods less than 12 months)

Definition

Periodic Registration has been introduced to provide the option for registered operators to register vehicles for periods less than 12 months.

Light Vehicles can be registered for 6 or 12 months and Heavy vehicles can be registered for 3, 6 or 12 months. There are additional charges for registering vehicles for periods less than 12 months (see formula below).

The period of registration can be changed when the vehicle's registration falls due for renewal or is re-registered.

Periodic registration is not available to common expiry registration.

How to use the periodic payment formula.

Periodic payments are normally calculated automatically on our data base. The formula is complex. It is based on the number of days in any given 3 or 6 month period. Each component of the total registration cost is calculated separately.

Formulae to calculate periodic payments

Periodic payments are calculated using the following formulae:

(FL + RF + RSL to nearest 5 cents) + MAIBF + MTF + Administrative Fee $6.65 ($3.30 for pensioners) = SUB TOTAL

SUB-TOTAL + plate fee + premium duty ($6.00) + Inspection (if required) + market value duty*(if required) = TOTAL AMOUNT PAYABLE

*Market value duty is unique to each vehicle and is calculated on its market value.  Applicable only for registration issue, re-issue & registration transfers, (See Appendix A. P4 Duty Rates

Detailed Fee formulae:

Registration, Road Safety Levy and Fire Levy

  • Fire levy - {N x (F/365)} = FL to the nearest 5 cents
  • Reg fee - {N x (R/365)} = RF
  • Road Safety levy ? {N x (S/365)} = RSL to the nearest 5 cents
  • Sub total (FL + RF + RSL) to the nearest 5 cents

Where:

N  is the number of days in the period for which registration is sought. This total is determined by not counting the first day of the registration period but including the last

F is the Fire Levy fee for a period of 12 months

R is the registration fee for a period of 12 months not including the Fire Levy

S is the Road Safety Levy for a period of 12 months

FL is the periodic Fire Levy fee

RF is the periodic registration fee

RSL is the periodic Road Safety levy

MAIB Premium

{N x (MAIB/365)} = split + S% = MAIBF

Where:

N is the number of days in the period for which registration is sought. This total is determined by not counting the first day of the registration period but including the last

MAIB is the MAIB premium for 12 months

Split is the calculated split of the MAIB premium

S is the surcharge % on the split MAIB premium - 3% for 6 monthly and 6% for 3 monthly

MAIBF is the periodic MAIB fee

Motor Tax

{N x (MT/365)} = MTF

Where:

N is the number of days in the period for which registration is sought. This total is determined by not counting the first day of the registration period but including the last

MT is the Motor tax fee for a registration period of 12 months

MTF is the periodic Motor tax fee.

Note:

  • MAIB Premium duty of $6 applies to ALL registration transactions including each periodic transaction.
