Formula to calculate Fees, MAIB & Motor Tax for periods either greater than or less than 12 months (Common Expiry & Periodic payments)
Periodic Registration (periods less than 12 months)
Fleet Operators (more than three vehicles) are able to arrange the registration of all their vehicles so that they expire on the same day. This is known as a common expiry date.
Fleet operators requiring a common expiry date need to contact the Registration and Licensing Branch of the Department prior to registering a vehicle.
If registering a vehicle under a common expiry date, the first renewal of registration must not be less than 60 days, nor greater than 12 months plus 60 days.
Periodic registration is not available to common expiry registration.
How to Calculate Common Expiry
Common Expiry is calculated using the following equation:
(fees) x no. days to expiry
365 (divide by 366 until 29th Feb 2000) = subtotal
Sub-total + plate fee + premium stamp duty ($6.00) + Inspection (if required) + duty (if required) = total amount payable
Note:
- fees equals the registration fee, MAIB Premium (minus $6.00 which makes up premium stamp duty), and motor tax (Govt. vehicles exempt) added together;
- days include the day of expiry and not the day of issue; and
- 365 equals the number of days in any year (not including leap years).
- Plate fee and premium stamp duty cannot be rebated on a pro-rata basis.
- Always round up or down total amount payable to the nearest 5c or 10c.
What is a Periodic Registration?
Periodic Registration has been introduced to provide the option for registered operators to register vehicles for periods less than 12 months.
Light Vehicles can be registered for 6 or 12 months and Heavy vehicles can be registered for 3, 6 or 12 months. There are additional charges for registering vehicles for periods less then 12 months (see formula below).
The period of registration can be changed when the vehicle's registration falls due for renewal or is re-registered.
Periodic registration is not available to common expiry registration.
How to use the periodic payment formula.
Periodic payments are normally calculated automatically on our data base. The formula is complex. It is based on the number of days in any given 3 or 6 month period. Each component of the total registration cost is calculated separately.
Periodic payments are calculated using the following formulae:
(FL + RF to nearest 5 cents) + MAIBF + MTF + Administrative Fee $5.70 ($2.85 for pensioners) = SUB TOTAL
SUB-TOTAL + plate fee + premium stamp duty ($6.00) + Inspection (if required) + market value stamp duty (if required) = TOTAL AMOUNT PAYABLE
Detailed Fee formulae:
Fire levy - {N x (F/365)} = FL to the nearest 5 cents
Reg fee - {N x (R/365)} = RF
Sub total (FL + RF) to the nearest 5 cents
Where:
N is the number of days in the period for which registration is sought. This total is determined by not counting the first day of the registration period but including the last
F is the Fire Levy fee for a period of 12 months
R is the registration fee for a period of 12 months not including the Fire Levy
FL is the periodic Fire Levy fee
RF is the periodic registration fee
MAIB Premium
{N x (MAIB/365)} = split + S% = MAIBF
Where:
N is the number of days in the period for which registration is sought. This total is determined by not counting the first day of the registration period but including the last
MAIB is the MAIB premium for 12 months
Split is the calculated split of the MAIB premium
S is the surcharge % on the split MAIB premium - 3% for 6 monthly and 6% for 3 monthly
MAIBF is the periodic MAIB fee
Motor Tax
{N x (MT/365)} = MTF
Where:
N is the number of days in the period for which registration is sought. This total is determined by not counting the first day of the registration period but including the last
MT is the Motor tax fee for a registration period of 12 months
MTF is the periodic Motor tax fee.
Note:
- MAIB Premium duty of $6 applies to ALL registration transactions including each periodic transaction.
- days includes the day of expiry and not the day of issue
- Plate/Inspection fee and premium stamp duty ($6.00) cannot be rebated on a pro-rata basis.
- Add the Administration Fee of $5.70 ($2.85 for pensioners) to the sub-total to all periodic payments
Always round up or down total amount payable to the nearest 5c or 10c.
