Background
The construction of the Dilston Bypass on the East Tamar Highway has improved the safety, freight efficiency and provided an upgraded transport link with Bell Bay Port.
The project includes two kilometers of dual carriageway and seven kilometres of three lane highway with a wire rope safety fence separating opposing traffic streams, as well as replacing the existing Barnards Creek Bridge with a new four lane bridge.
The Launceston City Council approved a revised development application incorporating a southbound underpass ramp on the southern junction and fog detection speed reduction signs for the northern seagull junction.
The Dilston Bypass was fully funded by the Australian Government.
Project Benefits:
The Project has provided significant benefits for the local community and transport including:
- Reduced travel times
- Greater freight transport efficiency
- Improved amenity for Dilston residents

The system will automatically adjust the speed limit according to the weather conditions (such as fog). The system will also warn motorists who fail to slow to a safe speed with a "Check your Speed" electronic sign.
o Electronic warning of side road:
Traffic on the East Tamar Highway approaching the northern junction will be advised by a "Watch for Turning Traffic" electronic warning sign that indicates that traffic is waiting to enter the traffic stream and they should be extra cautious.
