North East Freight Roads Project

Background

The North-East Freight Roads Projects are designed to improve safety for all road users and help manage a growing freight task in North-East Tasmania, which has extensive forest resources.

Successful completion of the replacement $1.3 million Tebrakunna Bridge over the Ringarooma River near Pioneeer, in March 2010, was the first project to be delivered under the program.

Detailed planning investigations for the remaining projects commenced in July 2010 and are continuing.

Project Benefits

The North East Freight Roads program will deliver the following benefits:

  • Improved safety for all road users;
  • Improved consistency of road geometry;
  • Improved transport efficiency for the forest and agricultural freight industry; and
  • Employment for Tasmanian road contractors.

Project Cost

The Australian Government has committed $34 million and the Tasmanian Government $8.5 million, bringing the total project cost to $42.5 million.

Widening, junction improvements and some curve improvements and pavement strengthening.  Bus stops and safety fencing.

Tasman Highway/Gladstone Main Road Upgrades - Derby to Herrick
Widening, junction improvements and some curve improvements and pavement strengthening.  Bus bays and safety fencing.
Concept design has commenced.  Construction programmed to start 2012-2013.

Prossers Road Upgrades

Improvements to the following Prossers Road and Lilydale Road Junctions:

  • Patersonia Road - Tasman Highway
  • Patersonia Road - Prossers Road,
  • Prossers Road - Lilydale Road
Planning work has commenced.  Construction programmed to start
2012 - 2013.

Camden Road UpgradeLocalised curve widening and culvert extensions.
Project scoping has commenced.  Construction programmed to start

Timing

Construction commenced with the replacement of the Tebrakunna Bridge, completed in April 2010.

The next construction project is planned for summer 2011/12, will be focussed on bridge replacement work around Mathinna.

During 2012/13 and 2013/14 construction years works will take place simultaneously at all project locations, subject to relevant government approvals.
