Bridport Main Road Upgrade
Background Information
In 2007 the Government made an election commitment to upgrade freight roads in the north east of Tasmania.
Five projects have been put forward as part of the North East Freight Roads Project.
The projects are:
- Tebrukunna Bridge Replacement (completed)
- Tasman Highway/Gladstone Main Road Upgrade between Derby and Herrick
- Bridport Main Road Upgrade between Bridport and Scottsdale
- Mathina/Evereech Bridge Replacement
- Prossers Road Upgrade
- Camden Hills Road
The Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources has developed a concept design for the upgrade of Bridport Main Road. The proposed upgrade will improve safety for all road users and will improve efficiency for freight vehicles.
Funding
A total of $42.5 million has been allocated to the North East Freight Roads Project. The Australian Government has committed $34 Million from the Nation Building Program, and the Tasmanian Government has committed $8.5 million. Approximately $14 million has been allocated to the Bridport Main Road Project.
The Proposed Work
The project will improve safety for all road users including freight vehicles and school buses.
The project will include:
- Widening, strengthening and sealing the road between Burnside Road and Hurst Creek Bridge
- Improving Muskfield Road North junction
- Relocating overhead and underground services
- Constructing new bus stops and upgrading existing bus stops
- Upgrades to the Browns Road junction Jetsons Road South junction and the access to the tip by providing a passing bay for through vehicles.
Heritage and environmental values will be considered carefully before works commence.
Timing
Construction is due to commence in late 2013 and will take 2 years.
