Tasman Highway and Gladstone Main Road Upgrades
Background Information
In 2007 the Australian Government made an election commitment to upgrade freight roads in the north east of Tasmania. The projects that will be funded as a part of the North East Freight Roads Project are:
- Tebrukunna Bridge Replacement (completed)
- Tasman Highway/Gladstone Main Road Upgrade between Derby and Herrick
- Bridport Main Road Upgrade between Bridport and Scottsdale
- Mathinna/Evercreech Bridge Replacements
- Prossers Road Intersection Upgrades
- Camden Hills Road Upgrades
The Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources has developed preliminary designs for the upgrades of the Tasman Highway and Gladstone Main Road. The proposed upgrades will improve safety for all road users and will improve efficiency for freight vehicles.
Funding
A total of $42.5 million has been allocated to the North East Freight Route Project. The Australian Government has committed $34 million from the National Building program and the Tasmanian Government has committed $8.5 million. Approximately $11.5 million has been allocated toe the Tasman Highway and Gladstone Main Road Upgrade Project.
The Proposed Works
The project will improve safety for all road users including freight vehicles and school buses. The project will include:
- Road widening
- Curve and cross-section improvements
- Safety barriers where required
- Junction upgrades at:
- Tasman Highway and Gladstone Main Road
- Tasman Highway and Winnaleah Road
- Underground and overhead service relocations
- Constructing new bus stops
A speed limit of 70 km/h will be assigned to the majority of the Tasman Highway and Gladstone Main Road between Derby and Herrick.
Heritage and environmental values are being carefully considered before works commence.
Timing
Construction is expected to commence in 2012/2013 and will take approximately 2 years.
