The Tasmanian Government allocated $23 million in the 2008-09 State Budget for the planning and construction of the Tarkine Road. When completed, the fully sealed road will take tourists on a 134km loop between the Wynyard area, Phantom Valley, South Arthur Forest Drive, the Great Nature Trail at Arthur River, Marrawah, Smithton and Stanley. In addition to 18.4km of existing sealed road the Tarkine Road will see the upgrading of 110.2km of existing gravel roads and tracks, with the realignment of several short sections, and the construction of a new 5.4km link to join the east and west road sections. The Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources is responsible for building the road, and is actively working with a number of road owners including Forestry Tasmania and the Waratah/Wynyard and Circular Head Councils. Contracts for construction of the road will be awarded through a competitive tendering process. The project will be subject to all required local, state and federal approval processes, including the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works. The project includes the development of some key tourism infrastructure facilities. The Department is working with Tourism Tasmania, local government authorities and tourism associations to identify which tourism infrastructure TimingsThe time table for the road is:
