The Tarkine Road project includes a range of possible tourism sites so visitors can enjoy the Tarkine and to give the tourism industry an opportunity to develop. The Department is currently looking at each location to determine what can be built and what is the highest priority. We are talking to the tourism industry to find out what would add most value to the region's tourist attractiveness.
The following tourism infrastructure alternatives have been selected to encourage visitors to spend several days exploring the region via the entire Tarkine Road or internal loop roads:
-
Lake Chisholm - Lake Chisholm is a really special place, being a flooded limestone sinkhole surrounded by rainforest. Currently there is an access road to the site with a carpark and walking track to the lake's edge. The Department is looking at sealing the access road, improving the carparking to include ten cars and two buses. Also the walking track will be hardened and visitor facilities and interpretation put in place at the lake's edge.
-
Kannunah Bridge - Kannunah Bridge is effectively the start of the South Arthur Forest Drive on the western side, and the location of the bridge provides an excellent view of the Arthur River. The Department is proposing a ten car, one bus, carpark, a viewing platform and interpretation west of the current turning circle.
-
Julius River - There is currently a picnic area with BBQ, benches, toilet facilities and car parking. This site could have increased parking capacity, improved BBQ areas, hardened walking tracks, and increased toilet facilities.
-
Phantom Valley - The Phantom Valley visitor zone is a flat area on a bend of the Arthur River, overlooking the Tarkine Forest Reserve. The Department will be working with the Burnie City Council on master planning for this location, however initially the proposal is for the following;
- new access road.
- 10 car carpark with bus parking
- hardened walking tracks
- footbridge over the Arthur River
- toilets
- visitor interpretation
-
Sumac Lookout - The Sumac Lookout is on the South Arthur Forest Drive and overlooks the Sumac Island in the Arthur River. The site improvements will include sealing the car-park, bus parking and improving the existing visitor facilities.
-
Couta Rocks - During discussions with members of the public the suggestion of the sealing of the road into Couta Rocks was made. This is a possibility and the Department is looking for feedback on this option.
-
Tarkine Lookout - The Tarkine Lookout is located on the top of a small hill in the northern end of the Tarkine Forest Reserve, which gives sweeping views in all directions. The proposal for this site is to build a new access road, a ten car, one bus, carpark, toilets, roughly 150m below the summit. Plus construct a hardened walking track to the improved lookout facility.
-
Tarkine Falls - The Tarkine Falls is one of the signature locations in the Tarkine Forest Reserve. Currently access to the Tarkine Falls requires a long bushwalk, which limits the range of people who can see them. The proposal is for a new access road and carpark with ten car spaces and one bus zone and toilets, 1.4km from the Falls themselves. The track to the Falls would be hardened as would the viewing area.
Before the assets can be developed, the Department is looking for feedback from the community, business groups, government agencies and tourism industry on which locations and visitor facilities should be constructed as part of the Tarkine Road Project.
The Driving Experience
Almost all of the road is being constructed on existing roads and tracks. Most of the roads to the west of Tayatea Bridge have good sight distances, and these roads will be sealed to six metres wide and carry mixed traffic, including cars and some trucks.
The eastern section from Tayatea Bridge to Myalla Road runs through steeper country where the existing roads are narrower with shorter sight distances and tighter bends. This section will be sealed to four metres wide, subject to load limits and some speed restrictions. |
