New Road Safety Rules

From 30 November 2009, there will be some changes to the road safety rules.


The Tasmanian Road Safety Council (TRSC)

The Tasmanian Road Safety Council (TRSC) is the principal road safety stakeholder and consultative body in Tasmania. The TRSC provides advice to the Minister for Infrastructure. At present, a major role of the TRSC is to monitor, provide advice and make recommendations on initiatives under the Tasmanian Road Safety Strategy 2007 - 2016. The TRSC oversees expenditure of the Road Safety Levy.

Annual Report 2008 - 2009

The Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources provides an Annual Report covering the financial results for the year and commenting on the year's outputs and the outlook for the future.


Tarkine Road Project

The Tasmanian Government allocated $23 million in the 2008-09 State Budget for the planning and construction of the Tarkine Road.

When completed, the fully sealed road will take tourists on a 134km loop between the Wynyard area, Phantom Valley, South Arthur Forest Drive, the Great Nature Trail at Arthur River, Marrawah, Smithton and Stanley.


East Tamar Highway - Dilston Bypass

The construction of the Dilston Bypass on the East Tamar Highway will improve the safety, freight efficiency and provide an upgraded transport link with Bell Bay Port.

The project includes two kilometres of dual carriageway and seven kilometres of three lane highway with a wire rope safety fence separating opposing traffic streams, as well as replacing the existing Barnards Creek Bridge with a new four lane bridge.


Kingston Bypass - Current Status

Following the Kingborough Council's Planning Committee meeting on 28 September 2009, the development application has been approved. The project is being assessed under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). We are currently awaiting approval.

Detailed design works are in progress. Tenders are expected to be called on 24 October 2009. Construction is expected to start in January 2010 (subject to EPBC approval) with a planned completion date of June 2012.


Business Sale Agreement for purchase of the Tasmanian rail business

On 7 September 2009, the Minister for Infrastructure announced that the Government and Pacific National had formally entered into a Business Sale Agreement for purchase of the Tasmanian rail business.
