Description
You do not require a learner licence if you are moving to the next class of licence above your current class of licence, however, all normal requirements for learner drivers apply.
A driver progressing more than one licence class will require a learner licence with the exception of those moving from a C Class (car) licence to a MR Class (Medium Rigid) licence.
You will need to pass a knowledge test will need to be undertaken prior to or after any practical driving test.
A learner licence is valid for the same time as your normal licence (they will expire at the same time). If you renew your normal licence, your heavy vehicle learner licence will also be renewed.
A learner licence will be issued as an x condition on the normal licence.
Some applicants may be required to undertake a training course with an approved Recognised Training Organisation

Age, experience and class of vehicle
The issuing of a learner licence depends on your age and driving experience, and the class of vehicle.When you meet the requirements, you can then undertake the theory and practical test to be issued that class of licence. Customer provides
You need to undertake the following in person at Service Tasmania shops or designated police stations:
- provide your licence
- pass a heavy vehicle knowledge test (see Tasmanian Heavy Vehicle Drivers' Handbook, (PDF))
- provide a completed application for Learner Licence form.
If no learner licence is required, you must pass the knowledge test prior to or after undertaking the practical driving test.
