Licences - Senior Drivers Guidelines

There are some changes to the licensing procedures when you reach the age of 65.

A. ALL DRIVERS AGED 65 AND OVER
After you turn 65, you still need to renew your driver licence when it is out of date.  Your licence will last for 5 years. No renewal fee applies.  It is only necessary to pay a small fee for the photo-card.

How to renew your licence:

  • A few weeks before your licence expires we will send you the usual renewal form.
  • Take the form to your local Service Tasmania Shop or participating Police Station and have your photo taken.
  • An officer will take your form and your fee for your photo and give you a temporary licence.
  • Within 21 days your licence will be posted to you.

B. DRIVERS AGED 75 AND OVER
To keep your licence current after you turn 75 you need to:

  • renew it before it expires (see A);
  • have an annual medical examination.

 Medical Examinations:

  • Every year we will send you a medical questionnaire for you to take to your doctor.
  • Your doctor will examine you and fill in the questionnaire.
  • You are responsible for any payment for the medical examination.
  • Send your completed medical questionnaire to Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources, GPO Box 1002, Hobart 7001, or take it to your nearest payment centre.

Licence Confirmation:

  • If your doctor confirms you are medically fit to continue driving, and the report is sent to us, we will NOT contact you again until another medical becomes due; or
  • If we require further information on your medical condition or your doctor requests that you undertake a driving assessment due to your medical condition we will write to you again.

If you remain medically fit to drive a motor vehicle, you do not need to contact us, however if you do not remain medically fit to drive you must, by law, contact us as soon as possible.

REMEMBER - Even if you have annual medical assessments, you are still required by law to notify the Registrar of Motor Vehicles if you develop a medical condition or your existing medical condition changes.
