Description
If you have previously held a full motorcycle licence (anywhere in the world) and you need to get a learner licence, you will be issued with a non-novice learner licence.
- You may need to get a non-novice learner licence if -
- Your full licence has been expired for more than 5 years
- Your full licence was cancelled and it must be reissued as a learner licence
- You are applying for the transfer of your overseas licence and it has expired or you have failed a riding assessment
How old must I be to get a non-novice motorcycle learner licence?
Minimum age requirements are:
- 16 years and 5 months to attend the pre-learner motorcycle training course
- 16 years and 5 months to sit the motorcycle driver knowledge test
- 16 years and 6 months to hold a motorcycle learner licence
Attending a riding course first
You must successfully complete the pre-learner motorcycle training course prior to obtaining a learner licence unless you live on King, Flinders or Cape Barren Islands.
How do I get a non-novice motorcycle learner licence?
Go to a Service Tasmania shop and -
- Show evidence of identity
- Fill in a learner licence application form
- Pass the motorcycle driver knowledge test
- Show your certificate of competence for the pre-learner training course (valid for 3 months)
- Have your eyesight tested
- Pay the learner licence fee
- Have your photo taken
- Provide your signature
- A receipted temporary licence
- Licence condition attachment if applicable
- a photo licence through the mail (valid for 12 months)
Rules for non-novice motorcycle learner riders
When riding, you must -
- Carry your licence
- Have a zero blood alcohol content
- Clearly show L-plate at the rear of the motorcycle
- DON'T travel faster than 80km/h at any time, even when a higher speed limit applies
- Only ride a Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) motorcycle
- Only carry a pillion passenger if that person has held a motorcycle licence for at least 3 years and is riding pillion in order to instruct you
- Wear an approved motorcycle helmet
- Sit astride the seat and face forwards
- Have at least one hand on the handlebars
- Have your feet on the footrests (unless the motorcycle is stopped)
- DON'T ride more than 2 abreast within 1 lane
LAMS-approved motorcycles
All learner and P1 riders can only ride LAMS motorcycles. This means that the motorcycle must be specified on the LAMS list and conform to the LAMS requirements (ie power to weight ratio and engine capacity requirements.
All motorcycles with an engine capacity under 250cc are approved with the exception of the following:
- Suzuki RGV250
- Kawasaki KR250 (KR-1 and KR1s models)
- Honda NSR250
- Yamaha TZR250
- Aprilla RS250
To check if your motorcycle is LAMS-approved you need to check your registration label. If the motorcycle is LAMS approved, the words "LAMS-APPROVED" is printed on the registration label. If you have any queries please contact the Transport Enquiry Service on 1300 851 225

How do I progress to a full motorcycle licence?
To get your full licence you must pass the pre-provisional training course.
When you pass your training course, go to a Service Tasmania shop and-
- fill in a licence application form
- show your licence or evidence of identity
- show your certificate of competence (valid for 3 months)
- pay the licence fee
- have your photo taken
- provide your signature
You will receive -
- A receipted temporary licence
- Licence condition attachment if applicable
- a photo licence through the mail
How do I renew my non-novice motorcycle learner licence?
If you have not progressed to a full licence before your learner licence expires, you can renew it. Before it expires you should get a letter in the mail explaining what you must do to renew your licence.
To renew your non-novice learner licence you need to go to a Service Tasmania shop and -
- Show evidence of identity
- Fill in a licence renewal form
- Pass the car driver knowledge test
- Pay the learner licence fee
- Have your photo taken (or use the photo stored on the system)
- Provide your signature
