Pre-learner Motorcycle Training Course

Before obtaining a motorcycle learner licence you are required to successfully complete the pre-learner motorcycle training course.

Who must attend

Generally everyone wishing to obtain a learner licence needs to attend this course unless they live on Flinders, Cape Barren or King Islands.


Customers must be at least 16 years and 5 months to attend the course.

Bookings, and fees

The courses are operated by the Training Providers. Bookings are essential and fees must be paid at this time.


The course is competency based consisting of two parts, each one half day (ie 4 hours) in length and held on consecutive days. The two parts cannot be undertaken on the one day and if not undertaken on consecutive days, the second part of the course must be attended no more than 8 days after the first part of the course.


The venues for the courses will be advised by the training provider at the time of booking.

You will need to provide

When attending the course:

  • sturdy footwear
  • appropriate protective clothing providing full skin cover
  • approved helmet (AS1698) and appropriate gloves (helmet and gloves can be provided without charge)
  • evidence of identity

You will receive

  • Certificate of Competence (valid for 3 months) on the successful completion of the course
  • Issue of another learner Licence. For renewing your motorcycle learners see renewing a driver licence


You will need to pay the course fee direct to the Training Provider.
