Review of Taxi Industry Legislation

The Taxi Review Project was established to review the legislation governing the taxi and luxury hire car industries. The Taxi Review Project has considered a wide range of issues which contribute to service delivery to passengers and to the efficient regulation of the taxi and luxury hire car industries. Many of the issues addressed in this Review were identified during the work of the Taxi Industry Review Group established in 1999 to review Tasmania's taxi legislation.

In December 2005, DIER established a new Taxi Industry Reference Group to provide input from the taxi industry to the Review. During the Review, DIER produced a series of discussion papers on matters affecting both the taxi and luxury hire car industries.

As a result of the Review, DIER developed a set of draft policy proposals for reform of the taxi and luxury hire car industries (Tasmanian Taxi Association Submission is available by clicking on the link below). These draft proposals were made available to the public and comment from interested persons and groups in the community was invited during March and April.

Over fifty submissions were received in response to the call for feedback. DIER has prepared Paper 12  Submissions in Response to Paper 11 setting out the many alternative proposals that were submitted and discussing each proposal on its merits. In some cases, this has led to a change in the original draft proposal.
