Paying for registration by DIRECT DEBIT

Direct Debit is a convenient way to pay your vehicle registration, allowing you to "set and forget" your registration payments. Your registration renewal fee will be deducted from your bank account (credit cards are not accepted at this stage) at least 14 days before the expiry date.

The full amount required to pay your registration renewal period will be deducted. You will need to provide your bank account information and sign an authorisation allowing us to deduct the amount of your registration renewal.

You should check with your bank to make sure that Direct Debit is available from your account.

Once you have signed up for Direct Debit, we will continue to deduct the amount due for your registration for each period (you can nominate for your registration to be renewed every 6 or 12 months, and 3, 6 or 12 months for heavy vehicles) until you cancel the direct debit request.

Why should I use Direct Debit?

By signing up to Direct Debit, you will not need to organise to renew your vehicle registration.  Your registration will be renewed automatically upon confirmation of payment received from your bank. It is easy to set up and use Direct Debit and you can cancel the service at any time.

How do I apply for Direct Debit?

You will need to complete a MR6 Direct Debit Request Form (PDF 82KB) and email the form to tes@stategrowth.tas.gov.au or mail to:

The Registrar of Motor Vehicles
GPO Box 1002 Hobart, Tasmania 7001

Will my information remain confidential?

We will take all reasonable precautions to maintain the confidentiality of your information. For more information see the Tasmanian Government Personal Information Protection statement.

Is there a cost to use Direct Debit?

No additional costs are applied to vehicle registration renewals paid by Direct Debit. However, if your payment is rejected by your financial institution, they may charge you a fee. You will need to contact your financial institution about this.

Does the bank account need to match the name on the vehicle registration?

No - anyone can pay the registration. If the person making the payment does not have a Tasmanian driver licence or vehicle, they will need to present evidence of identity at Service Tasmania before Direct Debit can be set up for the vehicle.

Can I have Direct Debit for more than one vehicle?

Yes - you can have Direct Debit scheduled for as many vehicles as you please. You can list up to six vehicles on each MR6 Direct Debit Request Form (PDF 82KB).

How much notice do I need to give to set up Direct Debit?

You can set up Direct Debit at any time, however if your registration is due to expire within three weeks, that payment will need to be made via one of our other payment options.

Can I make monthly payments by Direct Debit?

No. At this stage, Direct Debit is only available for the current registration periods (6 or 12 months for light vehicles, and 3, 6 or 12 months for heavy vehicles).

Can I also pay my licence renewal and other fees by Direct Debit?

No. Direct Debit is only available for registration renewal.

Can I choose the Direct Debit payment date?

The Direct Debit payment date needs to be sufficiently before the registration expires to allow the department to contact you if the payment is rejected. The debit date must be at least 14 days before the registration expiry date so that if the payment does not go through, there is time for you to be notified to organise to pay your registration through another channel so you are not driving an unregistered vehicle.

Can I pay by Direct Debit using my credit card account?

No. At this stage we are unable to accept Direct Debit payments from a credit card account. The Department is in the process of introducing Direct Debit payments from credit accounts. Direct Debit payments from credit accounts will be available in the near future.

How will I know when Direct Debit is scheduled?

You will still be sent your registration renewal approximately 6 weeks before your renewal date.  This will remind you that a Direct Debit is scheduled and that no action is required by you.

What if there isn't enough money in my account?

If there are insufficient funds in your account, your bank may dishonour the Direct Debit request. You should contact your bank to confirm whether any bank fees will apply.

How do I reschedule my Direct Debit payment date?

If you wish to change your Direct Debit payment date, email tes@stategrowth.tas.gov.au or mail Registrar of Motor Vehicles, GPO Box 1002, Hobart, 7001, with details of your request and provide your:

  • Full name and address
  • Vehicle registration number/s
  • Requested Direct Debit date

NOTE: The change must be made at least 3 weeks before your registration is due to allow for processing time.

What if I sell a vehicle scheduled for Direct Debit?

When a vehicle is disposed the direct debit schedule will be automatically deleted for that vehicle. The registered operator should ensure the disposal notice has been received and recorded by the department at least 14 days prior to the scheduled payment date to ensure a direct debit payment will not be made for the vehicle.
