Designated Operator
All vehicles with two (joint) registered operators are now required to nominate a designated operator. The designated operator should be the person who is the usual driver of the vehicle.
Any offence for which an infringement notice is not physically handed to the driver of the vehicle will be issued to the designated operator. This means that payment of the fine and any demerit points will be the responsibility of the designated operator. If the designated operator was not driving the vehicle at the time of the offence, that person can complete the supplied statutory declaration, identifying the driver and the infringement notice will be issued to that driver.
Eligibility to be a designated operatorThe designated operator must;
- be one of the registered operators,
- be at least 16 years of age and
- be recorded on the register (Motor Registry System) with an individual record
Nominating/changing the designated operatorIf you are one of the two registered operators you can nominate yourself or the other registered operator as the designated operator of your vehicle. You can change the designated operator at any time.
If you have an individual record (rather than a joint record) on the register (Motor Registry System) you will be eligible to become a designated operator, because you have previously provided proof of identity to the department.
Individual record on the register (Motor Registry System)
You will have an individual record on the register if you have;
- a Tasmanian driver licence,
- previously held a Tasmanian driver licence,
- a vehicle registered in Tasmania solely in your name, or
- previously been the sole registered operator of a Tasmanian registered vehicle.
Anyone who does not have an individual record on the register can become a designated operator as long as proof of identity is sighted at a Service Tasmania shop. This means you will have an individual record created.
To nominate the designated operator call the Transport Enquiry Service on 1300 851 225 or alternatively you can complete the nomination/change of designated operator form and forward to the Registrar of Motor Vehicles GPO Box 1002 Hobart 7001.
