Disposal

When a registered operator disposes of the responsibility for a vehicle, they are no longer:

  • responsible for the use of the vehicle on public streets
  • recorded on the Motor Registry System as the registered operator.

For example, the former registered operator will no longer be responsible for traffic infringement notices.

Before disposing

Before disposing of a vehicle the current registered operator should:

  • locate the current certificate of registration - duplicate certificates of registration and application for transfer of vehicle registration and notice of disposal can be obtained from Service Tasmania shops
  • on the certificate of registration check details relating to the vehicle and the registration expiry - these details are listed on the certificate or can be confirmed by contacting the Service Tasmania shops.

Vehicle details can also be checked if necessary through the online Registration Status Service which includes whether the vehicle is stolen or wrecked.

When disposing - 7 day limit

To cease being the registered operator ensure the necessary paperwork is completed and lodged within 7 days. For vehicles registered in joint names ensure other registered operators have signed the notice.
