3. How long do I have to transfer the vehicle?
The new registered operator (BUYER) must transfer the registration of the vehicle into their name within 14 days of taking on responsibility.
4. What are the penalties for not paying on time?
If the vehicle is not transferred within 14 days, you are committing an offence that may result in a fine and a penalty of up to twice the initial duty charge.
5. How long do I have to notify the Registrar of the sale of my vehicle?
If you have just sold or given your vehicle to someone, you are required to notify the Registrar of Motor Vehicles within 7 days. There is no fee involved. Disposal notices can be left at any Service Tasmania shop.
6. What will happen if I fail to notify the Registrar within 7 days?
Until you notify the Registrar of the sale of your vehicle you will remain legally responsible and may be held liable for any camera detected or other offences.
7. What things should I check before purchasing a vehicle?
When purchasing a motor vehicle, it is important to check the registration status recorded with the Registrar of Motor Vehicles. Although the seller may have current registration papers in their name, these are not proof of legal ownership nor are they necessarily indicative that the vehicle is currently registered. To ensure the status of the vehicle, visit the Registration Status Service .
- There are no financial encumbrances recorded against the vehicle. If the vehicle is financially encumbered it is important to contact the holder of the encumbrance before completing the deal. Failure to do so may result in the vehicle being repossessed from you at a later date.
- To confirm registration details – always check to make sure the details that you have been given by the seller are correct. Personal information can not be disclosed but you can confirm the registration details eg the registration expiry date etc.
8. Where can I pay?
Transfer applications can be paid at any Service Tasmania Shop.
9. How can I pay?
Payments can be made at any Service Tasmania shop by cash, cheque or EFTPOS.
