Periodic and Seasonal Registration - Heavy Vehicles

Periodic and seasonal registration is available for certain heavy vehicles (Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) over 4.5 tonnes) and is only available at the time of:

  • new registrations
  • reissues
  • renewals

Heavy vehicle registration

Heavy vehicles can be registered for 3,  6 or 12 months periods.
The vehicle must exceed 4.5 tonnes GVM to be eligible for 3 monthly payments.

If a customer has previously registered a vehicle, then a renewal for the same period of time, will be forwarded at the time of expiry.
The customer has the option to pay the registration for a different period of time other than the prior payment.

Under the Heavy Vehicle Scheme:

  • An administrative fee applies to each payment
  • A surcharge (6% - 3 months) and (3% - 6 months) applies to the MAIB Premium

Seasonal registration

Seasonal registration is available to heavy motor vehicles and trailers used by primary producers for a seasonal activity, such as harvesting. Heavy snow vehicles may also be seasonally registered. The vehicle can only be used on public roads during the period nominated by the operator at the time of registration.

Under the Seasonal Registration Scheme:

  •  vehicles can be registered for 3 or 6 month periods with an administrative fee and a 6% (3 months) or 3% (6 months) surcharge on the split MAIB premium. a vehicle's registration to lapse for up to 12 months before renewal without requiring an inspection or the return of number plates.
  • an effective date for the transaction to be nominated up to 30 days in advance of the renewal date.
  • a reminder letter, rather than a renewal form will be sent to the owner 11 months into the lapsed period of registration, advising that there will be one month left before the vehicle's plates are to be returned if the vehicle's registration is not to be recommenced.
  • as the seasonal application form incorporates a statutory declaration to provide for the 40% rebate of motor tax for primary producers, an application form must be completed for every seasonal registration.

Applying

The customer needs to follow the appropriate procedure:

If the 3 or 6 month option is taken, there will be an administration fee and a surcharge on the split MAIB premium applicable on each payment.
