Periodic registration is available for light vehicles (Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) under 4.5 tonnes) except common expiry vehicles and is only available at the time of:

• new registrations
• reissues
• renewals

Light vehicle registration

Light vehicles can be registered for 6 or 12 months periods.
Vehicles with common expiry registration cannot be registered for 6 month periods.

If a customer has previously registered a vehicle, then a renewal for the same period of time, will be forwarded at the time of expiry.
The customer has the option to pay the registration for a different period of time other than the prior payment.

Under the Periodic Registration Scheme:

• vehicles can be registered for 6 month periods an administrative fee is charged for each periodic payment. A 3% surcharge on the split MAIB premium also applies, and
• an additional $6 payment of premium duty applies annually

Applying

The customer needs to follow the appropriate procedure:

• new registrations
• reissuing
• renewal

If the 6 month option is taken, there will be an additional payment of the administration fee and a surcharge on the split MAIB premium applicable on each payment.
