Description
A 3 month period from the date of registration expiry is provided to allow renewal without vehicle inspections and other procedures.
Periodic registration can be obtained for light vehicles except common expiry vehicles where the registration is due on or after 1 July 2001.
Periodic or seasonal (primary producers) registration can be obtained for heavy vehicles. Heavy snow vehicles may also be seasonally registered.
A vehicle assessed as a repairable write-off can be re-registered following the successful completion of a 3rd Level Inspection.
A vehicle assessed as a statutory write-off cannot be re-registered.
Re-issue for most vehiclesRegistration re-issue is required for motor vehicles or trailers which:
- have their registration expired for 3 months or more
- are ex-government and purchased at auction on or after 1 March, 1999
- have cancelled registration
- is a repairable write-off.
Inspection generally requiredAll vehicles requiring registration re-issue need inspection, except the following:
- tractors or machinery, including farm tractors
- any off-road vehicles
- vehicles with restricted registration
- vehicles with club registration
- A vehicle assessed as a statutory write-off cannot be re-registered Note: A vehicle assessed as a repairable write-off is required to undertake 3 inspections: Approved motor body builder. Approved inspection station and Transport Inspection.

Vehicles with special registration requirements are listed under Conditional registration:
- Club event
- Conditional
- Concessional
- Special purpose - work vehicles
- Restricted.
Ex-mainland vehiclesAll vehicles transferring from the mainland, except those exempt from inspection listed above, require inspection before they can be registered in Tasmania.
Visitors to Tasmania who do not have a Tasmanian residential address are exempt from the requirement to transfer the vehicle registration.
However once a person takes up residence they must transfer the registration within 3 months from that date.
A visiting vehicle being used for a commercial purpose (e.g. hire and drive) is required to transfer to Tasmanian registration within 3 months from the date of entry into the State..
Residents of Tasmania who bring a currently registered interstate vehicle into Tasmania should make arrangements for the vehicle to be inspected and registered in Tasmania as soon as possible but no longer than 3 months from the date of entry into the State.
Vehicles assessed as a repairable write-off in another State or Territory cannot be re-registered in Tasmania until the vehicle successfully passes 3 levels of inspection. (Written off vehicle register questions and answers). Vehicles assessed as a statutory write-off in another State or Territory cannot be re-registered in Tasmania.
Overseas vehicles
Left hand drive vehicles, except rally vehicles to be registered under the Special Interest Vehicle Registration Scheme, that are less than 30 years of age must be converted to right hand drive and be certified as acceptable in order to be registered.

Requirements for the registration of vehicles sold at auction
Wrecked vehicles and Written-Off vehicles
If the vehicle has a wrecked status it will need to be inspected by an authorised vehicle bodybuilder and an Approved Inspection Station (AIS).
If a vehicle has a repairable written-off status, it will need to be inspected by an approved motor body builder, an approved inspection station and a Transport Inspector.
Written-off vehicles assessed as a statutory write-off cannot be re-registered in Tasmania.
Customer providesThe customer needs to undertake the following as appropriate.
Make a booking for an inspection through:
- an Approved Inspection Stations for light vehicles
- the Transport Enquiry Service on 1300 851 225 for heavy vehicles and written-off vehicles.
Then have the vehicle inspected.
The customer then undertakes the following in person at Service Tasmania shops:
- complete the appropriate application forms for registration and MAIB (provided by the Inspection Station)
- complete any rebate form
- provide the completed inspection certificate
- provide Proof of Entitlement
- provide their current Tasmanian photo licence or Full Evidence of Identity.
Ex-mainland registered vehicles
- same as above for 'Most vehicles', PLUS
- previous registration paper, if available
- surrender the mainland plates - if plates are unable to be surrendered the client must complete a Statutory Declaration stating their whereabouts
- same as above for 'Ex-mainland vehicles', PLUS
- contact the Australian Transport Safety Bureau to obtain appropriate papers (Tel (02) 6274 7506)
- provide a certificate from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau
- provide the import papers from the Australian Customs Service
- provide the current registration papers and number plates issued in the country of origin
- same as above for 'Most vehicles', PLUS
- provide a sales receipt - this is adequate Proof of Entitlement (if vehicle was purchased from a recognised auction group eg Fowles, Jupps)
Wrecked vehicles and written-off vehicles
- these must also be inspected by an approved motor body builder and Transport Inspector (written-off [repairable] vehicles only)
- provide a letter from a loss assessor stating the previous registered operator's details
The customer will receive the following.
For the initial application (as appropriate)
- an Application for Registration of a Motor Vehicle or Trailer Certificate of Premium Paid
- a Pensioner or Farmer Rebate Application
- an Application for MAIB (MR 36A) for off-road vehicles
- a Second level inspection form
- a Statutory Declaration Form
- an Application for Period or Seasonal Registration Forms
- the certificate of registration and validated label
- the number plates
The customer needs to pay:
- the fee.
