Rebates & Concessions

Rebates and concessions are available for a range of vehicles and situations.

Pensioners (including Health Care Card Holders)

To be eligible for a concession a person must be in receipt of a pension or allowance issued under the Social Service Act 1991 (i.e. Centrelink) or the Veteran Entitlement Act 1981 (DVA) and hold a pensioner concession or health care card.

In addition a person who is a member of the Transport Access Scheme (TAS) is eligible for a concession on registration.  TAS members and Totally and Permanently Incapacitated (TPI) pensioners are eligible for an exemption from motor tax and duty for one vehicle registered in their name.

A concession is limited to one vehicle in each vehicle class.  For example a person can receive a concession on one car, one trailer, one motor cycle or one caravan.

On initial application for a concession a Statutory Declaration must be completed this declaration also requires the pensioner to provide their concession card displaying the Centrelink Customer Reference Number or Department of Veterans Affairs number.

Pensioners or health care card holders who own a commercial vehicle that they do not intend to use for business or trade purposes are also entitled to a further 40% rebate on motor tax if the Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) does not exceed 4.5 tonnes.

To obtain this they must complete a Statutory Declaration each year at the time of renewal.

Farmers

Farmers are entitled to a 40% rebate on the motor tax for commercial goods vehicles only. No proof is required for farmers to receive this rebate, however a Statutory Declaration must be completed each year at the time of renewal.

If a motor vehicle has a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) greater than 15.9 tonnes (over 4.5 tonnes for a trailer) the vehicle must display concessional registration plates.  These can be purchased at a Service Tasmania shop and the old plates must be handed in.
