The vehicle cannot be used during the expired period and is deemed unregistered.
Options for renewal of registration depend on whether the vehicle is classified as light (Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) 4.5 tonnes or less) or heavy (GVM over 4.5 tonnes).
Periodic registration can be obtained for light vehicles except common expiry vehicles where the registration is due on or after 1 July 2001.
Periodic or seasonal (primary producers) registration can be obtained for heavy vehicles. Heavy snow vehicles may also be seasonally registered.
There is an administrative fee and a surcharge on the split MAIB premium attached to the 3 and 6 monthly payment options each time the periodic option is used.
The vehicle cannot be driven on a public street during the expired period.
An exception is for seasonally registered vehicles which are owned and operated by primary producers or are heavy snow vehicles. These vehicles can utilise three or six month registration to coincide with the timing of a seasonal activity, then remain unregistered for up to 12 months, until the vehicle is required again.

The registration of any motor vehicle or trailer expires at midnight on the date of expiry. The vehicle may not be used or parked on a public street until the registration is renewed. If a registration has expired for less than 3 months it can be renewed without penalty.The vehicle cannot be used during the expired period and is deemed unregistered.

If the registration has expired for 3 months or more the registration may be re-issued subject to meeting certain requirements.An exception is for seasonally registered vehicles which are owned and operated by primary producers or are heavy snow vehicles. These vehicles can utilise three or six month registration to coincide with the timing of a seasonal activity, then remain unregistered for up to 12 months, until the vehicle is required again.
Customer provides
The customer needs to undertake the following through Service Tasmania shops as appropriate:
- complete the application for renewal - sent out automatically prior to the registration expiry date
- complete an application for pensioner concession
- provide a Tasmanian voucher or photocopy of a pension card
- complete a statutory declaration if they are pensioners or farmers eligible for the 40% Motor Tax rebate - also for interchangeable trailers and plant trailers.
The customer will receive their:
- certificate of registration and label.
The customer needs to pay:
- the registration fee.
