Replacements & Duplicates

Description

This section applies to:

  • a certificate of registration
  • a registration label
  • a number plate
  • a trade plate
  • an identification card
  • any other plate or device issued by the Registrar of Motor vehicles.

Lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed

A duplicate of any of the above items can be obtained by application to  the Registrar of Motor Vehicles.

Duplicates of existing plates

Customers may apply for a duplicate set of their existing plates. 

Replacements

Replacements for any of the items listed under Description above may be issued to correct errors or for changed circumstances.

Customer provides

The customer needs to undertake the following in person at Service Tasmania :

Replacements and duplicates

  • complete either an Application for Replacement Number Plates or Application for Duplicate Plates, whichever is appropriate
  • provide their current certificate of registration if available
  • provide their current Tasmanian photo licence or Full Evidence of Identity
  • surrender any remaining label or plates (not for duplicate plates) if available
  • provide a statutory declaration to account for lost or stolen plates or labels
  • provide authorisation from the registered operator if the customer is not the registered operator

Replacement certificates

  • provide their current certificate of registration

Customer receives

The customer will receive:

  • receipt for fees paid
  • receipt for any plates or labels surrendered
  • PLUS

Replacement plates

  • new number plates

Duplicate plates

  • Duplicate plates are required to be manufactured and customer will be notified by mail to arrange pickup. (Bike plates will be sent directly to applicant.)

Replacement certificates

  • certificate of registration and validated label

Replacement labels

  • new label

Payment

The customer needs to pay:

  • the appropriate fee
  • the fee if the original plates are retained.

(For customers applying for replacement plates at the same time as renewing registration, the fee is reduced by the label fee.)
