Segways
The Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources (DIER) advise that it is currently illegal to use a Segway on a public street. As Segways are classed as a 'motor vehicle' under section 3 the Vehicle and Traffic Act 1999, they are required to be registered, and users must have an appropriate driver licence to use one. Segways cannot be registered because they are not manufactured to the Australian Design Rules which specify the standards for vehicle safety.
The definition of 'public street' is quite broad and includes anywhere the public have access. Parks, beaches and recreational areas as well as roads and footpaths are all 'public streets' and it is illegal to use a Segway in any of these areas.
The use of Segways is being considered under a national project being undertaken by Austroads, a group of Australian and New Zealand traffic and transport authorities who provide expert input into national policy development. DIER will have some input into this project, and will look at the final outcomes before considering the use of Segways on public streets.
If you are unsure whether you can use a Segway in a certain area or have any other questions please contact the Transport Enquiry Service on 1300 851 225.
