Vehicle Inspection Locations
Vehicles require inspection on various occasions including:
- when the registration has expired for more than 3 months
- new vehicles which are not registered through the dealer registration scheme or do not have a type approval number
- vehicles previously registered interstate/overseas.
The location at which vehicles may be inspected varies depending on whether the vehicle is classified as light (Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) 4.5 tonnes or less) or heavy (GVM over 4.5 tonnes).
Light vehicles
These are inspected through Approved Inspection Stations (AIS).Bookings are essential and made directly through the inspection station. These are inspected through Approved Inspection Stations (AIS).

Heavy vehicles
Approved Inspection StationsTransport Inspectors undertake the inspections using the site.
Bookings are made through the Transport Enquiry Service on 1300 851 225.
Customer provides
The customer needs to make a booking for an inspection through:
- an Approved Inspection Stations (AIS) for light vehicles
- the Telephone Enquiry Service on 1300 851 225 for heavy vehicles.
The customer then attends the inspection.
Customer receives
The customer will receive:
- inspection certificate.
Payment
The customer needs to pay:
- the fee.
