Friday 24 February: Intensive night works continuing on Brooker Highway

An intensive program of night works is underway on the Brooker Highway Junction Upgrades project.  Crews are working overnight putting a final layer of asphalt on the south bound lanes to ensure a clean surface for the final line marking.

The works are being undertaken at night to reduce interruption to road users.

These night works will continue on Friday 24, Saturday 25, Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 February 2017.

The project team is working hard to finish the project as soon as possible. A final completion date for this project will be announced shortly.

The Department would like to thank the community for your continued patience while these works are delivered.

Changed intersection and lane operation, please drive with care and consideration

The changeover work was successfully completed on Friday 10 February and Saturday 11 February.

The roundabout at Howard Road has now been replaced with an intersection with traffic lights.

Both Elwick and Goodwood and Howard Road intersections are now aligned with traffic on permanent lanes.

Please be patient while all drivers adjust to both the new conditions and to increased traffic volumes with the recent start of the school year.

Some minor works on and close to the Highway will continue during the next few months.  Expect ongoing changes to traffic conditions.

The reduced speed limits are necessary for the safety of the travelling public and for construction workers. The speeds of vehicles going through this intersection are being monitored.

Keep checking the latest news for further information.

Friday 10 February night works: roundabout to be replaced with traffic signals

Motorists are advised that traffic conditions at the Brooker Highway Junction Upgrades project will change this Friday, 10 February.

The roundabout where Howard Road and Renfrew Circle meet Brooker Highway will be removed and replaced with a new, larger intersection controlled by traffic lights. At the same time, north bound traffic on the Brooker will be moved onto new permanent traffic lanes.

Works are scheduled to start around 7:00 pm after the evening peak on Friday, 10 February and from this time:

  • traffic lights will be turned off at the Goodwood Road / Elwick Road intersection Highway to allow new traffic signals to be installed at Howard Road / Renfrew Circle
  • traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction and road workers will control traffic through both intersections until the new traffic lights are activated on Saturday, 11 February
  • local detours may be in place, and there may be delays of up to 15 minutes.

To safely move traffic onto new northbound lanes, traffic at the Elwick/Goodwood and Howard/Renfrew intersections will be stopped in all directions for approximately 15 minutes to completely clear the intersections. This will occur in the late night of Friday or very early hours of Saturday.

Signage is in place to alert motorists to the changing conditions and motorists are encouraged to consider taking alternative routes during the changeover works.

Reduced speed limits at the work site are necessary for the safety of workers and the travelling public, so please slow down, approach the intersection with caution and follow all traffic control instructions.

The installation of the traffic lights at Howard Road / Renfrew Circle is the last major change to traffic conditions at the work site. These changes will improve traffic flow through the work site by providing additional lanes for traffic, and allow the traffic signals at both intersections to be coordinated.

Minor works will continue over the next few months as final works are completed, and during this time drivers can expect ongoing changes to traffic conditions.

The Department would like to thank the community for your continued patience while these works are delivered.

No construction works over Christmas – New Year period

During this period the site will be monitored on a regular basis.

The project email address will not be checked during this period.  Any urgent issues can be reported to the customer service number on 62 777 666.

Please take care while travelling over this period – everywhere on our roads, whether construction sites or not.

Monday 17 October: Changed intersection and lane operation, please drive with care and consideration

Thank you to road users who obeyed the 40 kmph speed limit while workers were on the road completing the Elwick/Brooker and Goodwood/Brooker intersection alignment during the night of Saturday 15 September.

Elwick and Goodwood Roads are now in their final position at the Brooker Highway intersection and traffic has been switched to the new lanes on the Brooker Highway.

Please allow extra travel time and be patient while all drivers adjust to the new conditions.

The reduced speed limits are necessary for the safety of the travelling public and for construction workers. The speeds of vehicles going through this intersection are being monitored.

The way traffic travels through the Elwick/Goodwood Road intersection and along the Brooker Highway has changed.

  • traffic on Elwick Road is using new lanes that align with the Goodwood Road traffic lights, creating a smaller, simpler and more efficient intersection, and
  • traffic on Brooker Highway is using newly constructed lanes, starting near the Derwent Entertainment Centre and through to a new temporary roundabout at Howard Road.

Road work is continuing on the Brooker Highway.  Keep checking for further information.

Changed intersection operation, please drive with care and consideration

Thank you to the road users who obeyed the 40 kph speed limit while workers were on the road combining the Elwick/Brooker and Goodwood/Brooker intersections during the night of Saturday 3 September.

Installation of the new traffic lights at the intersection of Goodwood and Elwick Road with the Brooker Highway has been completed successfully and the traffic signals are now fully operational.

The team were able to get the work completed several hours before scheduled, which is a great achievement in a complex site.

As with any new set of traffic lights there is still some fine tuning to signal operations to achieve the best traffic flow.

Please allow extra travel time and be patient while all drivers adjust to the new conditions.

The reduced speed limits are necessary for the safety of the travelling public and for construction workers. The speeds of vehicles going through this intersection are being monitored.

The way traffic travels through the intersection has changed.

  • The two existing junctions where Goodwood and Elwick Roads meet Brooker Highway are one large intersection controlled by one (instead of two) sets of traffic lights.
  • Traffic exiting Elwick Road and turning right onto Brooker Highway will continue to use existing lanes on Elwick Road, however in the new intersection there will not be a second set of traffic lights at Goodwood Road, which means traffic can continue along the Brooker Highway without stopping.

In the next few weeks, there will be continued work on the intersection.  Keep checking for further information.

Wednesday 31 August : On the evening of Saturday, 3 September traffic lights will be turned off at the intersections where Goodwood and Elwick Roads meet the Brooker Highway to allow new traffic signals to be installed.

Monday 22 August: Elwick and Goodwood intersections with the Brooker Highway

Final preparations to move traffic onto the new Goodwood / Elwick Road intersection are underway, and in the lead up to the change-over traffic conditions at the site are changing frequently.

The project team is working to minimise the impact of these works on travel times, however some delay are being experienced at all times of day.

Over the next few weeks, traffic conditions – including the number of lanes available to traffic in each direction – will be changing throughout the day and night, and delays are expected.  Motorists are reminded to allow an extra 15 minutes for travel through the work site at all times of day.

State Growth and contractor, Hazell Bros, acknowledge that these works are inconvenient and disruptive, and seek your understanding and support for this stage of the project.

To help with efficient traffic flow, motorists are reminded to enter the intersections only when there is clearly enough room ahead to move through.  Vehicles queueing across the intersection create further delays.
