2 February 2018: construction update

The next stage of works involves completion of the bridge.

Asphalting of the bridge surface and the transfer of traffic onto the new bridge is scheduled to start during the week of 5 February, 2018. The revised traffic arrangements are shown below.

The location of the Summerleas Road/Ferntree intersection will be moved to the northern side of the bridge (as shown in yellow in Figure 1). This intersection will remain until the roundabout underneath the bridge has been constructed.

The current intersection on the Huon Highway to Summerleas Road/Kingston will remain (as shown in green in Figure 1). All traffic movements will continue to be available.

Moving traffic onto the bridge will then allow for the final stage of works which involves completing the Summerleas Road interchange ramps and roundabouts underneath the bridge.

Speed restrictions and changed traffic conditions will continue throughout the construction period.

15 November 2017: construction update

The next stage of works will include the completion of the ramp, located south of the existing intersection, which will allow bridge construction to continue.

The intersection for access to Summerleas Road/Kingston will be moved to the new ramp, and will join the Huon Highway, approximately 500 metres south of the bridge works. The Summerleas Road/Ferntree Junction will remain.

The temporary intersection will be in effect the week commencing 27 November 2017, and will be in place until the bridge construction is complete – which is expected to be early 2018.

The existing junction at the northern end of the bridge will be closed to traffic. See diagrams below.

Speed restrictions and altered traffic conditions will continue throughout the construction period. To ensure the safety of all road users and construction staff please obey all traffic signs.

October 2017 – Construction update

Earlier this month the bridge beams were installed, with construction of the bridge deck the key focus over the coming months. Construction of the ramps and the road’s pavement continues.

Traffic will still be diverted via the temporary side road over the next few months – as bridge construction continues.

Please be aware that temporary speed restrictions and altered traffic conditions are in place throughout the construction period. These conditions are necessary to ensure the safety of all workers and road users.

Please slow down, approach the work site with caution, and follow all traffic control instructions.

15 August 2017 – Construction update

Bridge construction at the work site is progressing well – with the placement of the bridge piers and supports occurring. In addition the construction progress for both the south-bound on and off ramps, and north and south-bound road lanes, continues.

Traffic will continue to be diverted via the temporary side road over the next few months as bridge construction progresses. All existing traffic movements in and around the intersection (including movement turning into Summerleas Road) is still available due to the works’ minimal impact to traffic flow.

Temporary speed restrictions and altered traffic conditions will still be in place throughout the construction period. These conditions are necessary to ensure the safety of all workers and road users.

Please slow down, approach the work site with caution, and follow all traffic control instructions.

19 May 2017 – Construction Update

Changed Traffic Conditions

Traffic conditions have changed at the Huon Highway Summerleas Road intersection. All traffic has moved onto the temporary side road located adjacent to the existing highway.  This will allow for the second stage of work to commence which involves major excavations for the bridge construction.

All existing movements in and around the intersection, including turning into Summerleas Road, will still be available with minimal impact to traffic flow.

The temporary side road will be in place until early next year when traffic is moved across to the new bridge for the final stages of work.

Speed restrictions and altered traffic conditions will continue to be in place throughout the construction period.  These are necessary for the safety of workers and road users, so please slow down, approach the work site with caution and follow all traffic control instructions.

Bus stops

As part of the second stage of works, existing bus stops at the Summerleas interchange will be moved to the final location, approximately 1.0 kilometre north, at the existing pedestrian underpass.  The bus stops are being relocated for the safety of pedestrians and road users.

11 May 2017 – Construction Update

The second stage of works include moving traffic onto the temporary side road to allow for the bridge construction.  This formation will be in place until early next year when traffic is moved across to the new bridge for the final stages of works.  These changes will be made over the coming month.

During this stage all existing movements in and around the intersection will still be available with minimal impact on traffic flow.  Any changes will be clearly shown via the project Variable Message Boards (orange electronic signs).

Speed restrictions and altered traffic conditions will continue to be in place throughout the construction period.  These are necessary for the safety of workers and road users, so please slow down, approach the work site with caution and follow all traffic control instructions.

1 May 2017 – Construction Update

Works are progressing on the detour road which is adjacent to the existing Huon Highway.  It is anticipated that all traffic will move onto this detour road during May. This will allow major excavation to commence on the new intersection.

Reduced speed limits at the work site are necessary for the safety of workers and road users, so please slow down, approach the work site with caution and follow all traffic control instructions.

27 March 2017 - Temporary Lane Closures

Temporary lane closures will be in place on the Huon Highway at the Summerleas Road Intersection roadworks site between the times of:

  • 9:00 am to 5:00 pm from Tuesday 28 March to Friday 31 March.

During this period lanes for both directions of traffic will be down to one lane in total.

The lane closures are necessary to progress the next stage of this safety upgrade project.

Delays are to be expected and motorists should allow extra time for their journey.  We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Reduced speed limits at the work site are necessary for the safety of workers and road users, so please slow down, approach the work site with caution and follow all traffic control instructions.

Excavation has started! The majority of work over the next few months will occur alongside the existing Highway, not on it. However, with the increasing numbers of workers and machines on the site, please drive carefully, obey speed limits and the instructions of workers.
