The Tasmanian Government has assumed a caretaker role ahead of the election for the Tasmanian House of Assembly. It is important during this time that Tasmanian Government resources are not used to communicate political material. As such, no political or election material will be placed on this site.

St Marys Pass is now open, as of today, Monday, 19 December 2022.

A landslip and undermining closed the road in late October 2022 and significant works have been required to rebuild the road and make it safe. Our works included building a gabion wall to support the road from below and installing a retaining wall to protect the road from above.

We also repaired two smaller landslip sites and drainage repairs and improvements have been completed.

The gabion retaining wall is made up of about 210 baskets, is about seven metres tall and 40 metres wide, and is filled with 3000 tonnes of rock. About 400 tonnes of base material was used and just over 75 cubic metres of concrete was used to build and support the gabion wall.

We have built concrete block walls to support four other downhill slips with just over 100 concrete blocks used.

A revegetation spray-on solution containing grass and plant seeds, fertilizer and binders, has been used on steep and exposed soil faces to help prevent further slips and debris from falling on the road in heavy rain.

We thank the community for their understanding while this work was completed and the workers who were on site seven days a week to make the road safe to reopen as soon as possible.

Elephant Pass will remain open over the Christmas break to all road users with a reduced speed limit and a short section that has been reduced to one lane, and will continue to be inspected twice a day.

We will then close Elephant Pass on Tuesday, 3 January 2023 so we can safely and quickly finish the repairs that are currently underway on that road.

Local access to properties on Elephant Pass Road will be maintained however all access from the Tasman Highway to St Marys will be via Esk Main Road.

Elephant Pass remains safe to use with the measures we have put in place. We expect to be finished by early February 2023.
