We want to provide young drivers with the valuable opportunity of expert tuition and guidance, that will assist them in developing their driving skills and behaviours, and continued support if they fail their provisional test.

The Department will contact drivers as they become eligible for the free lesson.

If you have received advice that you are eligible for a lesson, all you have to do is book a lesson with a ‘Driver Ready’ Instructor.  You will need to let them know it’s a ‘Driver Ready’ lesson and provide your licence details.

Driver Ready Instructors

1Will I be eligible for a free lesson?

You will be eligible if:

  • You got your Tasmanian L1 car learner licence on or after the 19 March 2020


  • Failed a P1 driving assessment on or after the 22 June 2020.

If you are not eligible to receive an instruction lesson under this package there is the opportunity for all learner licence holders to receive one free instruction lesson, with their supervisory driver, through Keys2drive.

2When will I be notified?

If you are eligible the Department will contact you directly or if you fail your P1 assessment you will be provided with details about the free lesson.

3I received advice about a free lesson. What do I have to do?

Contact a ‘Driver Ready‘ Instructor.  Let them know you are booking a ‘Driver Ready’ lesson and have your Tasmanian licence details ready.

4I have to cancel my free lesson

Contact your instructor and book another appointment or cancel your booking.  Most instructors will have terms and conditions around cancellations. If you do not cancel within these timeframes you may not be eligible for a free lesson.

5When will the package end?

The government has committed $250,000 to support delivery of the ‘Driver Ready’ package. The package will be delivered from June – November 2020 or when the 3,600 lessons have been delivered.

6Can I apply to deliver instruction lessons?

The registration period for participation in the ‘Driver Ready’ package has closed however, the Department will continue to consider applications lodged by suitably qualified instructors across the state. To apply:
