2Bridgewater Bridge closure - Friday, 27 - Monday, 30 May 2022

The Bridgewater Bridge will be closed to all traffic next weekend to allow for essential maintenance.

Both lanes on the bridge will close from 8:00 pm on Friday, 27 May to 6:00 am on Monday, 30 May 2022.

An engineering assessment has revealed that one of the bridge joints has deteriorated and there is damage to the road surface, supporting concrete and reinforcing.

A 40 km/h speed limit will remain in place until the longer-term works are complete.

A full closure of the Bridge is required to access both lanes in order to undertake the repairs.

The bridge will then need to remain closed throughout Sunday to allow the concrete to set.

The bridge will be reopened once the repairs have been successfully completed and the concrete has set, which is expected to be by 6:00 am Monday 30 May.

Detours will be available via the Bowen Bridge or Tasman Bridge for those travelling to or from Hobart, or via Boyer Road for those travelling from the north to New Norfolk. The Bowen Bridge detour will be available for light vehicles only.

Some public transport services may be affected during the closure, and you will need to check with your local provider for more information if you usually travel across the bridge.

We will continue to maintain the existing bridge to keep it safe and operational until the New Bridgewater Bridge is open to traffic in late 2024.

Further information on the closure, including detour maps are available on the Transport website: https://www.transport.tas.gov.au/bridgewaterbridgeclosure

We appreciate your patience and understanding while these essential repairs are completed.

For more information visit the Bridgewater Bridge closure project page.

Please see the detour options map here.

4Midland Highway safety upgrades

When travelling between Hobart and Launceston along the Midland Highway you will be travelling through several road work sites.

You should allow an extra 45 minutes for your journey if travelling the full length of the Highway.

Please slow down and follow the directions of traffic controllers and signs.

For more information about the Midland Highway Safety Upgrades projects.

5Why are speed limits reduced on roadwork sites when no one is working?

Sometimes a lower speed limit stays in place at roadwork sites even when no obvious work is occurring.

  • Workers could be setting up or packing down a site.
  • There may be changes to the road surface or the center separation.
  • There could be new or no line marking or barriers or road workers and equipment on the road or at the side of the road.
  • Sometimes bad weather delays roadworks for a long time, and so the lower speed limit stays until the work is finished.

Speed limits on work sites are mandatory, meaning by law you must obey the speed limit and can be fined if you do not. The need to reduce the speed may not be obvious, but reduced speed limits are for your safety and the safety of road workers.

For more information about the Midland Highway Safety Upgrades projects, please visit http://www.midlandhighway.tas.gov.au/

Reduced speed limits and other traffic management are important for protecting road workers, and also to reduce the risks to the travelling public, including the risk of damage to vehicles.
