The first four priorities include upgrades from North of Rosevears Drive to Gravelly Beach Road, Atkinsons Road to Waldhorn Drive, Exeter to Batman Highway and at Motor Road Junction.

About the project

The Department of State Growth is upgrading four sections of the West Tamar Highway. This project will improve the liveability of communities along the highway by making the highway safer, and improving travel time reliability to and from Launceston.

The contract to design and construct these four priority project has been awarded to Hazell Bros Pty Ltd.

  • Road widening.
  • Sealed shoulders.
  • A new footpath on the eastern side.
  • Vegetation clearing and sight benching for better visibility.
  • Improved stormwater drainage.

5Current situation

We’re currently working on preliminary designs for all four projects.

Work on the first project is expected to start in spring 2020, wioth all four projects expected to be complete in mid-2021.

6Community consultation

We created concepts for the proposed upgrades and asked people to let us know what they thought in May 2019.

The consultation period closed on Friday, 31 May 2019. You can see the comments left during the consultation period on our interactive map.
