About the project

The new bridge, about five kilometres south of Bicheno, will accommodate anticipated future increases in heavy vehicles, and provide greater safety and convenience for tourists and cyclists travelling Tasmania’s iconic east coast.

Works will include the construction of a new 90-metre concrete bridge, demolition of the existing bridge and the realignment of about 1.4 kilometres of road to provide safer entry and exit to the bridge.

The new bridge is designed to handle potential increases in heavy vehicle loading for the next 100 years. The existing bridge was built in 1945.

The Apsley River Bridge is located at Apsley, approximately 5 km south of Bicheno on the Tasman Highway.

Works started in February 2021 and will be completed by June 2022.

We will be working between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm from Monday to Friday. To keep workers and road users safe, there will be changes to traffic conditions and a speed reduction will be in place during the works. Please follow the directions traffic controllers and signs and allow extra travel time.
