About the project

The Road Safety program will improve road safety for all Australians and reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on our roads.

Junction upgrades have been identified across Tasmania and prioritised under this program.

Completed projects

East Tamar Highway – Windermere Road/Magazine Road Junction

This project involved widening the East Tamar Highway to accommodate the construction of right turn lanes into Windermere Road and Magazine Road.

We completed the project in February 2022.

Bridport Main Road – Weymouth Road/School Road Junction

This project involved widening Bridport Main Road to accommodate the construction of a median lane to allow right turns into Weymouth Road and School Road.

We completed the project in February 2022.

Colebrook Road – Tea Tree Road Junction

This project involved widening Colebrook Road to provide a right turn lane into the side road.

The project was completed in November 2021.

Poatina Main Road – Green Rises Road Junction

This project involved widening Poatina Main Road to provide a right turn lane into the side road. The project was completed in June 2021.

The next junction upgrade sites identified in this program of works are:

1Frankford Main Road/Chapel Road, Harford – remodel junction

The project involves remodelling the junction with a conventional T-junction priority arrangement, incorporating a basic right turn facility.

This project is currently in the design phase with construction expected to start in September 2022.

Site investigation works started on Monday, 12 July 2021, which will help inform the final design of the project.

2Midland Highway (High Street) / Lake Leake Road (Montagu Street), Campbell Town – right turn lane

The project involves widening the road to accommodate a short right turn lane into the side roads.  Drivers slowing down or waiting to turn right are currently at a higher risk of rear end collisions.

This project is currently in the design phase with expected construction to start in July 2022

Site investigations started on Wednesday, 7 July 2021 which will help inform the final design of the project.

3Gordon River Road/Glenora Road, Bushy Park – right turn lane

The project involves widening the road to accommodate a short right turn lane into Glenora Road.  Drivers slowing down or waiting to turn right into Glenora Road are currently at a higher risk of rear end collisions.

This project is currently in the design phase with expected construction to start in July 2022.

Site investigation started on Monday, 12 July 2021 which will help inform the final design of the project.

4Pipers River Road/Waddles Road, Karoola – remodel junction

It is proposed to provide a larger radius curve on Pipers River Road, with a basic right turn facility at the Waddles Road junction.

This project is currently in the design phase with expected construction to start in September 2022.

Site investigation started on Monday, 12 July 2021, which will help inform the final design of the project.

5Pipers River Road/Bangor Road, Karoola – remodel junction

It is proposed to provide a larger radius curve on Pipers River Road, with a basic right turn facility at the Bangor Road junction

This project is currently in the design phase with expected construction to start in September 2022.

Site investigation started on Monday, 12 July 2021 which will help inform the final design of the project.

The shoulder sealing sites identified in this program of works are:

6Lyell Highway - Hamilton to Ouse

The Lyell Highway shoulder sealing project involves construction of a 1 metre wide shoulder on the identified 13.88 kilometres of road, between Hamilton and Ouse.

This project is currently in the design phase with expected construction to start in late 2022.

7Sheffield Main Road - South Spreyton to Sheffield

Given the high percentage of heavy vehicles using Sheffield Road, the shoulder will be widened from 0.5 metres to 1 metre, with 3 metre wide lanes in each direction.

Basic right turn upgrades, which allow straight-ahead vehicles to negotiate past vehicles waiting to turn right into the side road, are to be provided at:

*              Fairview Court

*              Scott’s Court

*              Winifred Avenue

*              James Road

*              Melrose Road / Gillam’s Road

*              Lower Barrington Road

*              Allison’s Road

*              Morey’s Road

*              Weeks Road

*              Dalwood Road

*              Barrington Road (south)

*              Hamptons Road / Hughes Road

This project is currently in the design phase with expected construction to start in Mid-late 2022.

Site investigation works will be carried out from Monday, 19 July 2021 which will help inform the final design of the project.

During investigations, we will be working Monday to Friday between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm.

8Tasman Highway, Between Esk MR and Diana’s Basin

Given the high percentage of heavy vehicles using the Tasman Highway, the shoulder will be widened from 0.5 metres to 1 metre, with 3 metre wide lanes in each direction.

This project is currently in the design phase with expected construction to start in mid-late 2022.

Site investigation works will be carried out from Monday, 19 July 2021 which  will help inform the final design of the project.

During investigations, we will be working Monday to Friday between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm.

Traffic impacts

During investigations, we will be working Monday to Friday between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm.

Traffic management will be in place during the works to ensure the safety of road workers and road users.

There will be a reduced speed limit and occasional lane closures. Motorists should allow up to 8 minutes extra travel time during this work

Please keep to the speed limits and follow the directions of traffic controllers and signs.
