We are building park and ride facilities in Kingborough, as part of the Hobart City Deal, to improve travel times and experiences for commuters in Kingborough and beyond.

1About the project

The Kingborough park and ride facilities are part of a broader package of works to develop better connections and ease congestion for commuters travelling from Hobart’s greater suburbs into the CBD.

The park and ride facilities will give people greater choice about how they travel into Hobart’s CBD.  The park and ride facilities have been designed to be safe and inviting spaces, with better parking facilities and passenger transport services.

The Firthside park and ride will include improving the existing roadside bus stops and informal carpark located near the intersection of Browns Road and Groningen Road.

The Huntingfield park and ride will include improving the existing bus stops and informal carpark located adjacent to Huntingfield Avenue south of the Algona Road roundabout. This location provides convenient access for both bus services and commuters and has the capacity for high-quality bus stop facilities and extensive parking.

We started working on the Firthside park and ride facility on Monday, 16 August 2021, and expect to be completed in early 2022.

We will start working on the Huntingfield park and ride facility on Monday, 22 November 2021, and expect to be completed in mid-2022.

2Community consultation

We asked the community for their feedback on the park and ride facilities in late 2020.

The report on the previous consultation period feedback and a fact sheet about the Kingborough park and ride facilities can be accessed below.

3Timing

Construction of the Firthside park and ride facility started on Monday, 16 August 2021, and will be completed in early 2022.

Construction of the Huntingfield park and ride facility started on Monday, 22 November 2021, and will be completed in mid-2022.

4Traffic and parking changes – November 2021

From Monday, 16 August 2021, will be working between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm from Monday to Saturday, weather permitting, at the Firthside site.

From Monday, 22 November 2021, will be working between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm from Monday to Saturday, weather permitting, at the Huntingfield site.

Road users of Huntingfield Avenue and Browns Road should allow up to eight minutes extra travel time for changed traffic and parking conditions during this work.

A reduced speed limit and lane closures will be in place during the works, to keep everyone safe.

Please keep to the speed limits and follow the directions of traffic controllers and signs.

No traffic impacts are anticipated to the Channel Highway, Algona Road Roundabout and Southern Outlet.

There will be limited parking at the Huntingfield site during construction. Please prepare for alternative parking arrangements as the number of spaces available may change frequently.

The work will not generate much noise. We will make every effort to minimise noise by arranging the work in stages at different locations and turning off machinery and vehicles when not in use.

5Bus changes – August 2021

During work hours, there will be a reduced speed limit of 40km/hr and a rolling lane closure, where one lane at a time will be closed for a maximum of two hours per lane.

Bus users should allow up to five minutes of extra travel time during this work.
