1What do I need to do if I am transferring vehicle ownership with no sale?

If you are submitting a transfer for a vehicle that you have not bought or sold you will have to follow the same transfer process outlined in “Buying a vehicle- from a private seller”.

In some situations, you will not have to pay the full duty fee or the registration transfer fee.

You will only be able to submit a transfer in person at Service Tasmania in these situations.

2Changing to or from joint operators

If you want to:

  • add a joint name to your registration
  • remove one name from current your joint registration.

You will pay:

  • half the duty fee
  • the full transfer fee.

3You are receiving a vehicle as part of a deceased estate

If you are the beneficiary you will not pay:

  • duty
  • transfer fee.

For more information on claiming an exemption please refer to the Guidelines provided by the State Revenue Office.

4You are receiving a vehicle as part of a family law settlement

If a vehicle transfer is due to a family law settlement you will not pay:

  • duty
  • transfer fee.

If you can provide a letter of exemption from the State Revenue Office.

5You have an exemption from the Commissioner of State Revenue

You will not pay duty if you have an:

  • exemption authority issued by the Commissioner of State Revenue
  • exemption number issued by the Commissioner of State Revenue.
