How do I order the new Personalised Plates?
You have two options, go to www.TASPLATES.com where you will be able to choose a design and reserve your selection or call the TasPlates call centre on 1300 787 060. You will need a credit card if you want to pay for your plates at the time of reservation.
How can I reserve and pay for a plate if I don't have a Tasmanian Driver Licence or a credit card?
I have reserved a Personalised Plate but I can't get to a Service Tasmania shop within 24 hours will I lose my plate?
Yes you will lose your reservation and you will need to reserve your plate again but if you have had your ID validated on the website (by providing your driver licence number) anyone can pay for the reserved plate on your behalf at a Service Tasmania shop.
Can I buy a Personalised Plate for display on my wall at home?
Yes you can buy Personalised Plates for display purposes only. If you decide at a later date that you would like to attach them to a vehicle go to your nearest Service Tasmania shop. You will need to complete an Application for Replacement Plates and pay a small fee.
Can I buy the smaller USA style plates to fit on my imported car?
Yes you can purchase a USA style plate, go to www.TASPLATES.com to check out what is available.
I have a vehicle registered as Special Interest can I buy Personalised Plates?
No, Special Interest, Vintage, Restricted, Conditional etc are already issued with distinctive number plates. These plates denote that the vehicle is registered with restricted use.
I have changed my address on TasPlates website do I have to change it at Service Tasmania?
Yes, you will need to visit a Service Tasmania shop with evidence of your new address or call Service Tasmania on 1300 135 513 or international +61 3 6169 9017 for further details.
I have received my new Personalised Plates can I keep my old plates?
No, when you receive your Personalised Plates you will be provided with two options for returning your old plates, either to Tasplates in the provided envelope or to Service Tasmania. If you do not return the plates within 7 days after receipt of your Personalised Plates follow up action will commence and may lead to a fine.
How much does it cost to insure my Personalised Plates?
You will need to contact your insurance company for advice on insuring your Personalised Plates.
What happens when I sell my Personalised Plates and or vehicle?
Firstly you will need to complete an Application to Transfer Right to Display when you are:
- Selling your vehicle with the Personalised Plates attached.
- Selling your Personalised Plates only that were attached to a vehicle.
- Selling your Personalised Plates that have never been attached to a vehicle.
This form is available from Service Tasmania or by phoning TasPlates call centre on 1300 787 060. Once completed give that form to the purchaser. Failure to notify that you have sold these plates may result in you being liable for speed camera and other offences.
Who else should I notify that I have sold my vehicle with the Personalised Plates attached?
As the seller, it is also your responsibility to inform the Registrar of Motor Vehicles concerning the sale of the vehicle. If you are retaining your Personalised Plates you must purchase a set of number plates for that vehicle. Any of these transactions can be undertaken at a Service Tasmania Shop.
What do I do when I have bought a car that has Personalised Plates?
If you wish to keep those plates the previous owner will give you a signed Application to Transfer Personalised Plates that authorises you to become the new owner. You will need take this form to your nearest Service Tasmania shop.
You will also need to transfer the registration of the vehicle to your name this must be done at the same time you transfer the plates.
If you do not wish to keep the Personalised Plates please return them to a Service Tasmania shop where you can purchase the standard issue registration plates to place on your vehicle.
My Personalised Plates have been stolen/lost who do I notify?
You will need to contact TasPlates call centre on 1300 787 060 they will also help you with purchasing a replacement set of Personalised Plates.
How do I change my old style Custom or Selected plates to the new Personalised Plates?
To upgrade your existing plates there is a fee calculated at 60% of the normal cost of the type of plates you want. You will need to contact TasPlates call centre on 1300 787 060 to arrange this change.
Can I buy custom and selected plates using the existing design?
No, these are no longer available, only the new Personalised Plates will be available.
How do I order a duplicate set of existing Custom or Selected plates?
These can be ordered at your nearest Service Tasmania shop for the normal duplicate plate fee.
I have bought a car that has Selected/Custom Plates what should I do?
You have two options you can:
- Transfer the plates to you and buy out the lease at 2 - times the annual fee - $125 (Selected) or $250 (Custom)
- Transfer the plates to you and upgrade to Personalised Plates for 60% of the normal cost of the type of plate. e.g. My Colour Plate $295.00 Personalised Plate fee would be $177.00
You will also need to transfer the registration of the vehicle to your name, this must be done at the same time you transfer the plates.
Can I advertise my company or business using the new Personalised Plates?
Yes you can, these plates are called Business Plates. To discuss your design needs please contact TasPlates call centre on 1300 787 060.
I reside interstate and have never lived in Tasmania; can I buy a set of Personalised Plates to display on my wall at home?
No, before you can purchase a set of Personalised Plates all applicants must establish their identity personally at a Service Tasmania shop by providing Evidence of Identity documents.
