1What do I need to do to cancel my registration?

To cancel your registration you will need to surrender your number plates at Service Tasmania.

If you are the registered operator of the vehicle you will need to provide:

  • your Tasmanian licence or other evidence of identity.

If you are another party surrendering on behalf of a registered operator will need to provide:

  • a signed letter of authority, and
  • their Tasmanian licence or other evidence of identity.

You will not need to provide a letter of authority to surrender if acting on behalf of:

  • a motor dealer
  • Tasmania Police
  • an auction house
  • an insurance company.

Please note

If another party is returning the plates, the refund can only be given to the registered operator of the vehicle.

If you are not the registered operator you will need to transfer the vehicle first to receive the refund please refer to buying, selling or transferring.

2If your vehicle has been stolen

If your vehicle has been stolen and you need to cancel your registration you will need to submit either of the following at Service Tasmania:

  • submit a completed statutory declaration
  • a police report.

Both documents need to show the date of the incident.

3If your vehicle has been written off

If your vehicle has been written-off and you need to cancel your registration you will need to submit either of the following at Service Tasmania:

  • confirmation in writing from:
    • an insurance company, or
    • loss assessor recognised by the insurance company.
  • a police report stating the date of the incident.

4If you have TasPlates and do not want to return them

You do not have to return your TasPlates to cancel your registration, but will need to do the following at Service Tasmania:

  • bring your TasPlates to be sighted
  • submit a completed statutory declaration.

5If you are unable to surrender your number plates for any other reason

If you are no longer in possession of your number plates for any other reason you will need to:

  • submit a completed statutory declaration at Service Tasmania
    • this will need to give a reason why you no longer have your number plates.

6What do I receive?

You will receive a plate receipt from Service Tasmania.

If you are receiving a refund your plate receipt will show this amount.

7What am I refunded?

The refund amount is calculated pro-rata from the date of the plate surrender to the registration expiry date.

Only the Motor Tax and MAIB premium are refunded.

Registration fees and levies are not refundable.

8How will I receive my refund?

A cheque will be mailed to your postal address.

Please allow up to 21 business days to receive the cheque in the mail.

  • If you are cancelling a Tasmanian registration to register the vehicle interstate please refer to the “Transferring a vehicle to or from interstate (buying or selling) and importing” page.
