Freight Access Bridge Upgrades Program

The Freight Access Bridge Upgrades Program upgrades state road bridges in order to allow for high-productivity freight vehicles (HPFV).

The Tasmanian Government is committed to strengthening Tasmanian bridges on key routes to retain the existing levels of service for heavy vehicle freight and community access.

Seven bridges will be strengthened as a part of the 2019 program. Location maps and work dates are listed below.

2019 Bridge Strengthening Locations

Midland Highway, Prospect

We will be doing strengthening works on the Midland Highway, at the Mount Pleasant Interchange (southbound), Prospect.

Works will start Tuesday 14 May 2019 and are expected to be done by Tuesday 11 June, weather permitting.

Traffic impacts

There will be southbound lane closures on the Midland Highway at times. Speed limits will be reduced to 40 km/h on the Midland Highway travelling in both directions for up to 24 hours at a time. Motorists should allow up to an extra 15 minutes when travelling through the area.

Bass Highway, Burnie

We will be doing strengthening works on the Bass Highway, at the Oakleigh Rail Underpass (northbound), between Wilson Street and Edwardes Street, Burnie.

Works started Wednesday 6 March 2019 and are expected to be completed by mid-May, weather permitting.

Traffic impacts

Northbound traffic on the Bass Highway will be reduced to one lane. Speed limits will be reduced to between 20 - 40 km/h. Lane closures and a reduced speed limit will be in place 24 hours a day and will affect travel times. Motorists should allow up to an extra 15 minutes when travelling through the area.

Bass Highway, Devonport

We will be doing strengthening works on the Bass Highway, at the Formby Road Underpass, Devonport.

Works will start Monday April 1 and should be finished by Monday 3 June 2019, weather permitting.

Traffic impacts

There will be temporary traffic changes to keep workers and road users safe, which will affect travel times.

Traffic lanes on Formby Road will be reduced to two lanes in each direction, and speed limits will be reduced to 40 km/h 24 hours a day, There may be more lane closures during the day.

Road users should allow up to an extra 15 minutes when travelling through the area.

Bass Highway, Travellers Rest

We will be doing strengthening works on the Bass Highway, at the Meander Valley Road Underpass, Travellers Rest.

Works will start Monday 1 April and should be completed by Monday 3 June, weather permitting.

Traffic impacts

There will be changed traffic conditions during the works, including lane closures and speed restrictions, to keep our workers and road users safe.

Please follow all signs and the directions of traffic controllers, and allow extra time when travelling through the work area.

Lovett Street Underpass, Ulverstone

We will be doing strengthening works on the Bass Highway, at the Lovett Street Underpass, Ulverstone.

Works will start Monday 29 April 2019 and should be finished by mid-June, weather permitting.

Traffic impacts

There will be lane closures on the Bass Highway and Lovett Street at times, for traffic travelling in both directions. Speed limits will be reduced to 20 – 40 km/h on the Bass Highway and Lovett Street, and the reduced speed limits will be in place 24 hours a day.

Road users should allow for delays of up to 15 minutes when travelling through the area.

Emu River Bridge (eastbound), Wivenhoe

We will be doing strengthening works on the Bass Highway, at Emu River Bridge, Wivenhoe.

Works will start Monday 29 April 2019 and are expected to be completed by the end of May, weather permitting.

Traffic impacts

Eastbound traffic on the Bass Highway will be reduced to one lane, and the speed limit will be lowered to 20 – 40 km/h. This will affect travel times.

Road users should allow for delays of up to 15 minutes when travelling through the area.

Motorists travelling east on the Bass Highway turning right on to River Road are encouraged to continue on to Stowport Road intersection, turn around and travel west on the Bass Highway to access River Road. This will ease congestion for heavy vehicles needing to turn right on to River Road.
