Freight Access Bridge Upgrades Program

The Freight Access Bridge Upgrades Program upgrades state road bridges in order to allow for high-productivity freight vehicles (HPFV).

The Tasmanian Government is committed to strengthening Tasmanian bridges on key routes to retain the existing levels of service for heavy vehicle freight and community access.

Seven bridges will be strengthened as a part of the 2019 program. Location maps and work dates are listed below.

2019 Bridge Strengthening Locations

Bass Highway, Burnie

We will be doing strengthening works on the Bass Highway, at the Oakleigh Rail Underpass (northbound), between Wilson Street and Edwardes Street, Burnie.

Works started Wednesday 6 March 2019 and are expected to be completed by mid-May, weather permitting.

Traffic impacts

Northbound traffic on the Bass Highway will be reduced to one lane. Speed limits will be reduced to between 20 - 40 km/h. Lane closures and a reduced speed limit will be in place 24 hours a day and will affect travel times. Motorists should allow up to an extra 15 minutes when travelling through the area.
