Southern Outlet Fifth Lane

The Southern Outlet between Kingston and Hobart carries one of the highest daily traffic volumes on our State road network, and building a fifth lane to accommodate improved public transport and emergency services is a key aspect of the Tasmanian Government’s Greater Hobart Traffic Solution. The Tasmanian Government has committed $35 million over the next five years to this project and will soon commence extensive planning, scoping and stakeholder engagement.

Concept Options Report

The Department commissioned consultants to produce a feasibility report for the provision of a fifth lane for buses and emergency services on the Southern Outlet. While this initial concept report shows that the project is feasible, and identifies several potential options and possible staging arrangements, the Department has not decided on any of the report’s options as a preferred way forward.

The project is highly complex and will require detailed scoping and extensive consultation with landowners and key stakeholders before a preferred approach is confirmed. It is important to note the options identified in this report show only that the project is possible and the final design may vary significantly from the initial concept. The preferred approach will take into consideration stakeholder feedback.
