We will consider granting approval for the use of the Tasman Bridge feature lighting for short-term events.

The event does not need to be held near the Tasman Bridge.

Requests will not be supported if they:

  • compromise safety to road traffic
  • impact the operation of river traffic
  • create a distraction to residents and the community
  • promote discriminatory messages or cause community disharmony
  • promote political causes or parties.

The request for the use of the feature lighting may be considered only if it meets one or more of the following criteria:

  • celebration of Australian national or Tasmanian state sporting teams and achievements
  • celebration of a major Tasmanian festival, public event or commemorative event with statewide or national significance
  • promotion of a major charitable event
  • promoting awareness of a charitable cause.

We normally will not accept more than one application per calendar year for the same event or cause.

TasPorts will have remote access to temporarily switch the lighting to white at any time to allow for safe passage of boats travelling under the bridge.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted by an applicant who officially represents the body that is organising the event or promoting the cause.

You can apply to use the Tasman Bridge feature lighting up to six months before your proposed dates. You must submit your application at least 20 business days before your proposed dates to allow enough time to assess it.

You can apply to use the feature lighting for a maximum of one week at a time and we typically will only accept a maximum of one application per calendar year for the same event or cause.

Applications are considered on a first come, first served basis.

We will only approve applications for the solid colours featured on our available colour chart. Multiple colours, patterns and flashing lights are not permitted.

We encourage you to apply early to make sure you don’t miss out on your preferred dates. We also encourage you to check the list of current bookings below before submitting your application, to see if your preferred dates and colour are available.

Applications can be sent by email to: roadstas@stategrowth.tas.gov.au.

Note: these requirements apply to external applications and may not apply to lighting changes initiated by the Department of State Growth. The department reserves the right to regularly review or change these criteria, or to support and/or refuse applications as required according to departmental priorities.
