About the project

We have developed designs to upgrade Bridport Road between Bridport and Bell Bay to improve freight efficiency and safety.

The upgrades include road widening, road repairs, slope improvement, and turning lanes at junctions to improve road user safety

The priority locations and improvements include:

Package 1

  • Bridport Road / Industry Road junction – road widening and installation of a left turn lane for Industry Road
  • Industry Road to Pipers River Road – improvements to the road camber (road slope), along with road widening between Industry Road and Pipers River Road
  • Bridport Road / Pipers River Road / Back Creek Road – road widening and installation of left and right turn lanes at Pipers River Road, and a right turn lane at Back Creek Road and the Pipers River General Store.
  • Bridport Road / Weymouth Road junction – installation of a left turn lane for Weymouth Road.

Package 2

  • between Jarvis Link and Little Forester River.

Package 3

  • between East Tamar Highway to Dalrymple Road junctions

Timing and designs

Package 1

We plan to begin construction in September 2026.

Package 2 and Package 3

Further design work is continuing on other sections of the Bridport Road. Package 2 between Jarvis Link and Little Forester River is currently being designed and is planned to commence construction in late 2027. Design is also being undertaken for package 3 from East Tamar Highway to Dalrymple Road junction, with construction planned for 2028.

Bridport Road

Bridport Road passes through nearby localities of Lefroy, Pipers River and Pipers Brook, and is situated on the traditional lands of the Northern clans, the Leenerrerter and Pyemmairrenerpairrener people.

1. Community consultation

Community consultation has now been completed for this project.

2. FAQs

How far has the project progressed?

Package 1 works will commence in September 2026, while packages 2 and 3 are still being designed and developed.

Will the project require land acquisition?

No land acquisition requirements have been identified for Package 1. Packages 2 and 3 are anticipated to include minor partial land acquisition to accommodate the new works. As the design progresses, we will identify the need for any land acquisition and discuss with the respective landowners.

3. Funding

The Australian Government has committed $16 million towards the project with an additional $4 million in funding committed by the Tasmanian Government.

A further $4M was also recently committed by the Australian Government, and another $4M by the Tasmanian Government, bringing the total funding commitment for this project up to $25M.
