About the project

We are installing 13 electronic billboards on key travel routes around Hobart for our Overhead Traveller Information System (OTIS).

Also known as Variable Message Signs (VMS), these billboards will show real-time travel times to key destinations. They can also show information about crashes, changes in weather, or unplanned incidents, so people on the road can make informed decisions about their travel.

We are also installing new Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras that will help our Traffic Management Centre monitor traffic and road conditions so they can feed timely messages to the billboards.

Starting in March 2024, we are installing:

  • 11 VMS
  • 2 CCTV cameras

These are being installed in City of Hobart, City of Clarence, Glenorchy City Council and Kingborough Council municipalities. See the locations below.

This project is jointly funded by the Australian and Tasmanian Governments.

1Traffic impacts: April 2024 update

There will be changed traffic conditions on the Southern Outlet, Brooker Highway, and other locations in greater Hobart over the coming weeks as we build the footings for gantries for the electronic message signs.

Southern Outlet

  • We will be working on the Southern Outlet, on the Hobart-bound lanes between Shaw Road and Proctors Road, from today (Monday, 8 April 2024) to Wednesday, 8 May 2024. During the day, there will be a reduced speed limit during working hours of 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. At night there will also be a reduced speed limit and a lane closure from 6:30 pm to 5:00 am.

Brooker Highway

  • We will be working on the Brooker Highway, on the Hobart-bound lanes near the Hockey Centre, from Tuesday, 9 April to Friday, 10 May 2024. During the day, there will be a reduced speed limit during working hours of 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. On Tuesday, 9 April, there will be a reduced speed limit and occasional lane closures at night from 6:30 pm to 5:00 am.
  • We will also be working on the Brooker Highway near the Berriedale overpass, from Tuesday, 9 April to Wednesday, 8 May 2024. There will be a reduced speed limit during our working hours, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Huon Highway

  • We will be continuing to work on the Huon highway, on Kingston-bound lanes on the approach to the Southern Outlet until Wednesday, 24 April 2024. There will be a reduced speed limit during our working hours, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.

South Arm Road

  • We will be continuing to work on South Arm Road between Merrindah Street and Wicks Place, Howrah until Friday, 19 April 2024.There will be a reduced speed limit during our working hours, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Tasman Highway

  • We will be continuing to work on Tasman Highway, between Cambridge Road, Cambridge and Flagstaff Gully Link, Warrane until Friday, 12 April 2024. During the day, there will be a reduced speed limit during working hours of 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. There will also be a lane closure at night from 6:30 pm to 5:00 am on Tuesday, 9 April.
  • We will be continuing to work on the Tasman Highway, between Dampier Street overpass and Flagstaff Gully Link, Warrane until Friday, 12 April 2024. There will be a reduced speed limit during working hours of 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Please keep to the speed limit and follow any traffic management directions.

We expect to complete installing all VMS and CCTV locations by November 2024, weather permitting.

5FAQs

How will OTIS help manage Hobart’s roads?

Installing VMS and CCTV will allow the State Roads Traffic Management Centre to provide road users with information to make real-time decisions about travel routes, and in response to changing traffic conditions as a result of weather, crashes or unplanned incidents.

When not required for incident reporting, VMS will display road safety messages and current travel times to key destinations.

What will the CCTV footage be used for?

Information captured by CCTV will be used by the Traffic Management Centre for monitoring traffic and road conditions. This will provide greater visibility of prevailing traffic conditions, and improve the ability to respond more effectively to incidents and other events.

When will the new VMS and CCTV ‘go live’?

We expect to have all new VMS and CCTV installed by November 2024. The system will need to be tested before being turned on to ‘go live’.

When will the new VMS and CCTV go live’?

The system will need to be tested before being turned on to go live.

Will vegetation be removed to install the VMS and CCTV?

Before installing VMS or CCTV, vegetation at some locations needs to be assessed.

Where possible and practical, vegetation will be retained and trimmed. Vegetation requiring removal will be marked.
