There is currently a project underway to establish a RG240 emissions testing framework in Tasmania
- Tasmania currently has no approved IM240 emissions testing facilities, and access to interstate testing services is increasingly limited.
- The Registrar of Motor Vehicles is aware of the challenges this creates and is considering options to make sure emissions compliance requirements remain practical, nationally consistent and aligned with the intent of the regulatory requirements.
- Existing certification pathways remain available in some circumstances, including comparative compliance and alternative pathways as outlined in the Vehicle Modification Certification Manual.
- Alternative approaches adopted in other jurisdictions, including RG240 emissions testing, are being considered as part of ongoing policy work.
- A project is being initiated to investigate a Tasmanian RG240 framework, including testing, recognition and compliance arrangements.
- Implementation is being considered for 2027. However, no implementation date has been finalised, and timeframes remain subject to approvals and priorities.
- Project timeframes will be affected by the current organisational changes across government, including the changes from Department of State Growth functions to Building Tasmania, as well as anticipated resource and staffing reductions across the Branch.
