There are many types of heart conditions which may affect driving. All drivers diagnosed with a heart condition are legally required to notify the Registrar of Motor Vehicles as soon as practicable. These conditions include:
- aneurysms
- angina
- heart disease
- hypertension
- post heart attack
- post heart surgery (bypass, transplant and fitting of pacemakers)
How do these conditions affect driving?
These conditions can result in a heart attack, stroke, palpitations or breathlessness, which may cause you to lose consciousness and/or control of your vehicle.
What are the symptoms?
- Chest, arm or jaw pain
- Sweating
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Shortness of breath
What precautions can I take?
- Knowing your risk of having a heart attack or stroke is the first step you can take to help prevent one. These risk factors may be attributed to:
- Age or hereditary factors
- Smoking
- Inactivity and obesity
- Diabetes
- Depression and social isolation
- Ensure you are taking any medication prescribed to you when required.
- Prepare for an emergency. The sooner you recognise a heart attack and get treatment, the better.
