Standard Taxi Training

Standard taxi training can be delivered by a nominated person engaged or employed by an approved accredited taxi operator or booking service provider.

The specified course of instruction - (Provide Taxi Services in Tasmania – Regulatory and Administrative Requirements and Transporting Passengers with Disabilities) provides the skills and knowledge required to operate a standard taxi (not a Wheelchair Accessible Taxi) to transport passengers.

This unit applies to all taxi drivers who are authorised to drive a taxi.

It includes carrying out pre-operational checks of the taxi and its ancillary equipment, operating a service in accordance with the law, communicating effectively with passengers with disability, assisting passengers and ancillary/mobility equipment, providing appropriate support to passengers during their journey.

The course will require you prove competent in:

  • transferring passengers

  • perform driving with limited or no supervision.

You will be fully accountable and responsible for self and others in achieving the prescribed outcomes of the above tasks.

Optional Literacy and Numeracy Assessment

You may be required by your taxi operator or booking service provider to undertake a literacy and numeracy assessment prior to starting training. If this is required by the taxi operator or booking service provider, assessment is to be conducted in person at the taxi operator or booking service provider’s premises under supervision of the Operator’s Nominated Person.

Wheelchair Access Taxi’s (WATs)

You will not be authorised to operate wheelchair accessible taxis (WAT) unless you have successfully completed the WAT training course.

WAT training is separate to standard taxi training and is currently provided by 13cabs.  Please call 6272 9292 for enquiries regarding fees and course information.
