Launceston is Tasmania's second largest city, with the CBD providing employment and services to the inner residential areas, and those from rural locations up to an hour away. The five main routes providing access to the city are East Tamar Highway, West Tamar Highway, Tasman Highway, Bass Highway and Midland Highway.

Demand on the Launceston road network has grown, resulting in increased traffic during morning and afternoon peak travel times. Future changes, such as the relocation of the University of Tasmania Launceston campus from Newnham to Inveresk will have an impact on where and how people move through the city.

Facts and Figures

  • In the morning peak, of all trips passing through or ending in inner Launceston, 50-60 per cent finished in the inner city, with the remaining 40-50 per cent passing through.
  • In the afternoon peak, of all trips passing through inner Launceston and destined for an outer region, around 50 per cent started in inner Launceston, with the remainder passing through inner Launceston.
