Importing a road vehicle
If you are importing a road vehicle, you need to follow the ‘8 steps to importing a vehicle’, provided by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts (DITRDCA).

To achieve Tasmanian registration, you will need to;
- Have the vehicle inspected at an Approved Inspection Station (AIS). Where the vehicle passes the inspection, you will be provided with a passed inspection report.
- Once in possession of a passed inspection report, attend a Service Tasmania outlet to establish registration. You will need to provide Service Tasmania with the following.
- Vehicle Import Approval (VIA) from DITRDCA.
- Passed AIS inspection report.
- Proof of entitlement.
- Tasmanian licence or evidence of identity
Important:
- Some imported vehicles require certification by an Approved Vehicle Certifier (AVC) to determine the vehicles compliance with relevant vehicle standards.
- Left hand drive (LHD) vehicles, it is a regulatory requirement for LHD vehicles to be at least 30 years of age to be eligible for registration.
- Please review the vehicles import approval as some vehicles may have conditions applied that prevent the vehicle from being eligible for registration.
