1General Vehicle Registration Transfer – Online

You may be able to transfer a registration using the Online Transfer portal.

You will need:

  • the vehicle’s registration number
  • the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or Chassis number
  • Seller/previous operator/s details
    • Surname and Tasmanian Driver licence number, or
    • Organisation/Company name and Customer Identification number (CIN), or
    • Licensed Motor Vehicle Dealer Number (LMVD) and Customer Identification number (CIN).
  • date of purchase or acquisition
  • purchase price or market price (whichever is higher)
  • Buyer/new operator Details
    • Surname and Tasmanian driver licence Number or,
    • Organisation/Company name and Customer Identification number (CIN), or
    • Licensed Motor Vehicle Dealer Number (LMVD) and Customer Identification number (CIN).
  • a Visa or MasterCard for payment of Transfer fee and Duty.

You will receive a registration certificate which includes receipt details by mail.

If the transfer is not successful using the portal, please visit Service Tasmania with the required documents required for ‘General Vehicle Registration Transfer - in person’.

2General Vehicle Registration Transfer – In person

To complete a transfer of vehicle registration in person at Service Tasmania, the transferee/new operator/buyer, is to provide:

Includes joint to single operators and single to joint operators.

  1. Tasmanian Driver licence or Evidence of identity
  2. Proof of exemption from duty (if applicable).
  3. Application to transfer vehicle registration with submission of the approved form MR1 (reverse side of registration certificate) or MR116 which includes:
  1. Signatures of the previous registered operator/s or seller/s, if no disposal notice is recorded.
  2. Signature of the new operator/s.

If item 3 cannot be provided item 4 is required.

  1. proof of entitlement
  2. Payment of Transfer fee and Duty (if applicable)

You will be provided a receipt and receive a registration certificate by mail.

3Transferring to or from joint operators

To add a joint name to your registration or remove a name from your current joint registration. Please see General Transfer of vehicle registration. Transfer fee and half-duty fee is applicable. This includes:

  • Two registered operators to one
  • where the new registered operator was one of the previously registered operators
  • where the previous operator remains one of the joint registered operators.
  • One registered operator to two registered operators (light vehicles only)

4Vehicles transferred as a part of a Deceased Estate

  • Duty exemption

Where a vehicle registration is to be transferred as a part of a deceased estate including vehicles jointly registered, and the new or surviving registered operator is the beneficiary you may be exempt from duty payment.  Please refer to Guidelines provided by the State Revenue Office.

  • Duty exemption not applicable

Where a vehicle registration is to be transferred as a part of a deceased estate and duty exemption has not been approved or is not applicable, you will need to provide documentation as provided for a general transfer of vehicle registration.

In the event that a beneficiary does not want to assume responsibility of a vehicle, the Registrar of Motor Vehicles may suspend or cancel the registration of the vehicle in line with R104(1) c of the Vehicle and Traffic (Driver Licensing and Vehicle Registration) Regulations 2021

5Vehicles transferred as a part of a Relationship breakdown (family Law Settlement)

  • Duty exemption

Where a vehicle registration is to be transferred as consequence of the breakdown of a domestic or caring relationship, you may be exempt from the Duty payment. Please refer Relationship Breakdown Exemptions provided by the State Revenue office

  • Duty exemption not applicable

Where a vehicle registration is to be transferred as consequence of the breakdown of a domestic or caring relationship and a duty exemption has not been approved or is not applicable you will need to provide documentation as provided for a general transfer of vehicle registration.

6Buying a brand-new vehicle from a dealer

If you are buying a brand-new vehicle from a Tasmanian licenced motor vehicle dealer that is recognised under the dealer registration scheme your registration and plates will be issued to you by the dealer at the time of purchasing the vehicle.

7How to register a vehicle you purchased at an Auction

  • Buying unregistered, cancelled or without registration number plates affixed

if the vehicle has never been registered, been unregistered for three months or more, the registration is cancelled or sold without registration number plates you will need to have the vehicle inspected at an Approved inspection Station and visit Service Tasmania with:

  1. Tasmanian licence or Evidence of identity
  2. Proof of exemption from duty (if applicable).
  3. Passed inspection report from Approved Inspection Station.
  4. an invoice or receipt from an: auction house, auction group or auto-wholesaler.

the invoice or receipt must include: the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or Chassis Number if the vehicle was sold with or without plates if not a statutory declaration can be completed. if the vehicle was sold in a damaged condition or as a total loss.

8Transferring a vehicle from interstate

  • Unless exempt by legislation vehicles must be registered for use on a public street in Tasmania
  • Everyone must register their vehicle in Tasmania within 3 months of entering Tasmania. EXCEPT non-Tasmanian residents in respect of vehicles not being used for a commercial purpose.
  • Interstate registered vehicles must be covered by a valid third party insurance policy such as MAIB or the equivalent third party insurance policy of another Australian jurisdiction.
  • If the vehicles use is prohibited by a registration authority or suspended this also applies in Tasmania.
  • If the seller surrenders the plates or the vehicle is unregistered you will have to purchase A short term unregistered vehicle permit in the state or territory where the journey begins or arrange for the vehicle to be transported to Tasmania.
  • A vehicle registration cannot be transferred or established to a person/company/body corporate who resides interstate, unless the person/company/body corporate who resides interstate has a garage address in Tasmania and can provide proof of that garage address.

9Buying an unregistered vehicle from interstate

Tasmania only facilitates the registration of a vehicle (Including caravans) from a Tasmanian licensed motor vehicle dealer or a vehicle which has been inspected at a Tasmanian Approved Inspection Station (AIS).

If you need to transport an unregistered vehicle from interstate to Tasmania, you may purchase a short term unregistered vehicle permit from the jurisdiction where your travel begins.

10If you are moving/have moved interstate

You will need to register your vehicle in the state or territory you move to. You should check with the relevant registering authority to see how long you have to register in their jurisdiction and what the process is.

If cancelling your Tasmanian registration, you may be able to apply for a refund of the remaining registration components MAIB and Motor tax.

When you register the vehicle in another state or territory you will need to:

  • Surrender your Tasmanian number plates at the relevant transport authority in the state or territory and,
  • Provide the plate surrender receipt for your Tasmanian number plates and email to tes@stategrowth.tas.gov.au with photo identification and current Postal address.

11If you are selling a Tasmanian registered vehicle to someone interstate

You will need to:

  • Submit a notice of disposal. within 7 days of selling or relinquishing responsibility for the vehicle.

You can sell a vehicle unregistered or registered.

  • If you wish to sell the vehicle without registration you can cancel the registration by surrendering the registration number plates at Service Tasmania. The new operator may purchase a Short-Term Unregistered Vehicle Permit to drive the vehicle back to their state of residence.
  • If you wish to sell the vehicle with registration you do not need to do anything further other than submitting a notice of disposal.

The new operator or yourself, by agreement, can apply for a refund of the remaining registration by providing a plate surrender receipt for the Tasmanian number plates and email to tes@stategrowth.tas.gov.au with photo identification and current Postal address.
