Personal transportation devices (PTDs)
PTD’s (e.g. Segway) can only be used under an unregistered vehicle permit issued to a tour operator and being used in certain locations approved by the Registrar of Motor Vehicles.
A driver license is not required, but the user must:
- wear a helmet
- travel under 12km/h
- be at least 12 years old
- weigh between 45 and 117kg
- have blood alcohol content of zero
- be of a height so their elbows are at least as high as the Segway's handlebar when standing on the platform
Other conditions may be applied to the tour operator.
To apply to operate PTDs as part of your tour business you will need to:
- Write to us;
- Registrar of Motor Vehicles, GPO Box 1002, Hobart 7001.
Other requirements around insurance and training will need to be met before approval is considered.
